In development for over six years, REPLACED has finally arrived. This 2.5D 'cinematic action platformer' takes us on a journey through a retro-futuristic
In our Replaced review, learn why Sad Cat's cyberpunk adventure was well worth the wait, despite some frustrating moments.
A neon dystopia where humanity fades and identity becomes a commodity.
The game uses its melancholic atmosphere and extremely human characters to discuss identity in a world that has forgotten what it means to live.
In REPLACE, the first thing that grabs players is its incredible pixel art style and its compelling story, which raises so many questions.
Take on the role of R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence in the human body, and uncover the insidious secret of the Phoenix Corporation.
Replaced is the debut game from developer Sad Cat Studios, and it’s one I’ve had my eye on for years. However, due to real-world challenges faced by the studio, including needing to relocate to a new country during development, Replaced suffered several significant delays. As a result, its eventual release…
REPLACED has finally arrived: how did this fascinating futuristic action adventure with its peculiar graphic style fare?
What a long time coming for highly anticipated indie. I remember being absolutely blown away by its pixel art during Xbox’s showcase back in 2021, I was hyped and eagerly awaiting its arrival every year. Equally bummed each time it didn’t show back up or there was a delay, but games with this level of art from an indie dev take time. Was the wait for Replaced worth it? Let’s find out.
REPLACED, a review of a title that combines action and platforming elements with a cyberpunk atmosphere in the form of an interactive film.
Although I can identify areas where Replaced falls a little short, I’m still walking away from the game impressed and satisfied. Its visuals are stunning, its story is risky and full of heart, and what its gameplay lacks in complexity, it makes up for in variety, never feeling complacent even despite occasional pacing issues. Replaced is a terrific experience, especially for the price and hopefully, it’s also just the beginning for Sad Cat Studios.
Replaced is a stunning achievement in art direction and atmosphere that just needed a bit more time in the oven - but what's here is well worth your time despite the rough edges.
The combat is the star of REPLACED. It’s so satisfying and slick that I couldn’t get enough of it, and when combined with numerous traversal puzzles, stealth sections, and action set-pieces the whole is far more glorious than the sum of its parts.
Replaced is a cinematic cautionary tale about the dangers of replacing human emotion with cold rationality.
REPLACED stands out for its extraordinary cyberpunk art direction and varied gameplay, despite some technical limitations.
Replaced offers up some of the best pixel art to ever exist, and much of its combat is so stylish that it feels pulled from some of the best action scenes across any genre. Flipping over an enemy to perform an execution never gets old, but the rest of the experience just doesn't live up to that high
Replaced focuses almost all its efforts on art and scene design, but the gameplay feels too thin.
Available since April 14, 2026 on Xbox Series and PC, is Replaced really the game-changer Sad Cat Studios has been promising for years? Here's our review.
You'll want to take in Replaced's retrofuturistic version of dystopian USA as much as possible, but the phenomenal visuals can only do so much to make up for the above-average combat and puzzle-platforming.
Replaced is a gripping and gorgeous 2.5D action platformer, even though this cyberpunk adventure could do with a system update to completely iron out the bugs.
REPLACED is a genuinely brilliant cyberpunk platformer. While it occasionally suffers from major glitches, frustrating mechanics, and pacing issues due to the combat, puzzles, and platforming, the gameplay high moments, incredible narrative, and gorgeous presentation more than make up for these issues. If you're a fan of the cyberpunk genre, then this is an absolute must-play. The five-year wait was worth it after all.
Replaced's art style is simply incredible to look at, and its narrative concerning AI and megacorps feels original rather than derivative. Even so, it's a very slow burn, with pretty basic platforming and mundane Simon Says-style combat.
Replaced has captured the imaginations of cyberpunk and indie fans for almost five years. It's time to see if there's anything noteworthy here beyond its atmosphere and gorgeous graphics.
Replaced delivers gorgeous pixel art, strong world-building, and a compelling sci-fi story, but repetitive gameplay and pacing issues hold it back.
After years of waiting, the time has finally come. REPLACED is now available, and our review is ready for you as well. Read all about the cyberpunk action game here.
Replaced is a visually stunning 2D platformer that ambitiously strives to give a thrilling and emotional experience in the still relatively exclusive cyberpunk niche. Alongside its numerous incredibly detailed, hand-crafted backdrops, its splendidly fluid combat system feels dynamic and addictingly fun to play from one encounter to the next. That said, the game evidently still needs some polishing in terms of combat balance, along with notably disjointed character movement when traversing through each zone's platform mechanics. However, that doesn't diminish what the game has accomplished from its years of development and clear commitment to detail. It's a truly memorable indie experience that you shouldn't miss out on this year.
Though rough on some edges, thanks to its striking audiovisual presentation, entertaining but challenging combat, and story with a compelling main character, Replaced is a great addition to the game library of anyone interested in the human condition in the age of AI, whether they are a fan of the cyberpunk genre or not.
Replaced game review covering deep combat, striking visuals: a slow burn story. A stylish side scroller that rewards patience and exploration
However, after this hesitant start, the game’s true identity begins to bleed through its neon-soaked exterior. As you progress, Warren’s journey gains significantly more depth through NPC dialogues and increased gameplay variety, gradually bringing the game’s true strengths into focus. Ultimately, REPLACED‘s gritty dystopian atmosphere—elevated by its distinct pixel art style and excellent synth-driven soundtrack—carries the experience more than the mechanics do.
