Beast of Reincarnation left me surprised in several ways and expertly blends several aspects from popular titles like From Software's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to Square Enix's Final Fantasy 16. Most importantly, though, developer Game Freak has taken its experience with its Pokémon games and crafted an entirely new and engaging game, delivering some of the best and most satisfying combat I've seen in a long time, and a narrative that will keep you guessing until the credits roll. It's not perfect and has a fair number of issues, but it has a worthy payoff.

Although I have a lot of affection for Kuu and quite enjoyed the combat, Beast of Reincarnation didn't captivate me. All of its ideas have already been better developed in other games, and it has too many technical, pacing, and narrative problems to recommend it wholeheartedly. Even so, I think there are players who will really enjoy Emma and Kuu's relationship and exploring the maps using their plant abilities.

The inclusion of a command-based system was brilliant, as it adds a layer of strategy to the flow of combat and makes the experience feel unique compared to others in the genre. While not all bosses are memorable, each of them offers an exciting dance of parrying, dodging, and finding the right moment to strike. I had a blast with Beast of Reincarnation, and I can’t wait to jump into a second playthrough in New Game Plus.
