AI: The Somnium Files - Nirvana Initiative Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
I encountered a few crashes while I played, but thanks to the auto-saves, the ability to manually save at any point during gameplay, and the fast-forward function, this never resulted in too much progress being lost. There also were occasional performance issues, but they weren’t bad enough to detract from the experience for me. The only thing I wish was different about the game’s presentation is that there is only a single manual save slot. Of course, you can use the flowchart to replay any section of the game whenever you want, but I still would have liked the option of having multiple saves...
Spike Chunsoft has done it again with AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES nirvanA Initiative. They tell an incredible murder mystery that’s a ton of fun to figure out, all while solving brain-bending puzzles and talking to a colorful cast of endearing characters. There are a lot of performance issues and bugs, but those are nitpicks compared to just the sheer joy of diving into people’s minds to solve the case.
AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative tells a satisfying tale with a great cast of characters, challenging puzzles, and a mystery that will keep players guessing with unique twists.
It’s full of pervy jokes too, so those unfamiliar with anime humor will likely be thrown off by the tone shifts. It’s like a friend nudging you every few minutes, asking “Hey, wanna hear a penis joke? What about a boob joke?” But somehow, it works. It’s the only sex joke-filled series that can get me emotionally invested between the lighthearted banter and porno-mag gags.
Not quite as good as its predecessor in some ways and notably better in others, AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative is a must-play for fans of anime-styled narrative games.
As a follow-up to a 2019 cult classic adventure game, this surprise sequel is full of heart and blows past expectations.
AI: The Somnium Files - Nirvana Initiative is a masterfully crafted murder mystery visual novel that smoothly blends in detective gameplay elements and puzzle sequences. It features an outstanding cast of characters and a competently crafted narrative that will keep you on your toes until the end. Even though the game has a smaller flowchart in terms of diverging narrative paths than the first game and may feel drawn out at times, it remains well worth checking out if you are into games of this genre.
nirvanA Initiative combines the best of AI: The Somnium Files’s presentation with the sharpest puzzles and best writing across Team Zero Escape’s catalogue.

When half of a body turns up during a live game show, it’s a horrific incident. Everyone is shocked, a police investigation is launched, and it’s a mystery that doesn’t have a good answer. When the other half of the same body turns up in a stadium six years later, it’s no random coincidence. The unsolved mystery re-opens, and the answer isn’t going to be simple.
