With only a few hiccups, Sniper Ghost Warrior: Contracts finds the fine line between action arcade and sniper simulation. While the story might be forgettable, landing the perfect shot from 500 meters away never stops being awesome.
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts’ refined gameplay delivers not only the best entry in the series but the best sniping experience to date.
It’s easy to get lost in the pleasure behind clearing an entire fortress in Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts. While the overall story isn’t compelling, the gameplay is gripping.
A big step up in the franchise and an excellent game on its own.
The Sniper Ghost Warrior series has always struggled to find its footing over the years, being a series that has always been unsure of what it wanted to be, with the last one being a Far Cry clone of sorts that didn’t quite hit the heights of that series. However, Contracts takes a new approach and hopefully going forward, is what Sniper Ghost Warrior strives to be.

It didn't take long at all for Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts to blow my expectations out of the water. In the very first mission I was crawling through snowy mountains, silently assassinating guards and stealing technology and trade secrets. I've played Sniper Ghost Warrior games before, and I've never been impressed. I've barely even been amused. And all of that changed with this entry, one which felt more polished than ever before, better looking, with a fascinating and engaging combat system that forces you to stay aware at all moments. One thing is certain about the Sniper Ghost Warriors series: CI Games is slowly bringing this franchise, kicking and screaming as it is, into a niche of its own. The early titles were horribly rough. This new one still betrays a lack of confidence in really breaking away to do something unique, but it’s getting there. I hope that one day CI Games wakes up to the fact that people are coming to this series because they want sniping action, not yet more open world Tom Clancy blended with Call of Duty. As it is, there’s more than enough of the sniping action to see the game over the line, but…
The sniping genre is a fairly popular niche of games these days, and games like Sniper Elite 4 make it easy to see why. You’re dropped into a playground and given enhanced skills to rain hell down upon unsuspecting enemies. The last time we saw the Sniper Ghost Warrior series, things were kind of mundane. Two years later, has CI Games improved things enough to warrant your attention and cash?
A stealth shooter that covers well-trodden ground and offers few surprises but will please fans of the genre with its manageable length and fair price.
In most cases, I would make my best attempt to give a game the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, bugs or shoddy graphics be damned. But not this time. SGWC is a mess from top to bottom, and even its moments of enjoyment are not worth the head-spinning number of missteps.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts is the fourth instalment in CI Games’ Ghost Warrior series. Does this title provide enough to stand out from the pack of other FPS games that dominate the market? Or should it stay hidden in its sniping hole? Let’s find out!
