Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 feels like it came out of nowhere to me. An entirely new IP from the new studio, Sandfall Interactive, based in France, we had no idea what to expect. However, as soon as I started it, I knew we had something truly special. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 manages to recapture the magic of old-school JRPGS whilst giving it a fresh Western spin, wearing all of its inspirations on its sleeve. This is easily one of the finest games since Baldur’s Gate 3.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of those double A titles that blurs the lines between it and the industry's biggest hitters. It isn't without issues, but as a debut title for Sandfall Interactive, it's an incredibly impressive showing that's well worth checking out.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a graphically beautiful game, but despite its glowing reputation, it does little to innovate within the RPG genre. The lack of navigation tools makes exploring its world incredibly frustrating, and the story only starts to get interesting near the very end.

What’s here is ambitious, and it’s written very well. I just wish the game was a bit confident in letting its quiet parts really breathe. In the fine details, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 shines. In an ironic twist of fate - and maybe in an intentional confrontation of its themes - it was these fine details that I wanted to enjoy the most. The disruption to these details throughout the main story feels intrusive, and I sit here thinking, “Was that the point”?
