Long-distance relationships are extremely difficult. Months—sometimes years—may pass before you have the chance to be with your partner, and what time you do get to spend together you pray isn’t interrupted. You text, call, or video chat as much as possible but that’s not enough to silence the nagging doubt and depression. A Fold Apart tackles the hardships brought on by long-term separation, using puzzles as the therapeutic medium.
A Fold Apart is about hope and how love can get us through even the toughest of times. In that way, it's timeless.
A Fold Apart is a stellar story-driven game with intuitive new mechanics and fun puzzles to solve.
It’s not every day that a video game has the capacity to move me to tears, and I can’t say I remember the last time it even happened. It’s usually easy for me to distance my emotions from a work of art or a piece of media, but Lightning Rod Games’ new puzzle game A Fold Apart has no issue whatsoever breaking down all of my walls. It’s an emotional journey more than it is a simple puzzle game. A Fold Apart is a story about love. And more than that, it’s a story about separation. It’s about doubt. Grief. Loneliness. Pain. Sadness, and strength. It’s about the struggle between emotion and reason ...
A Fold Apart is a unique experience in terms of what is on offer from a puzzle-solving aspect, with the paper-folding brain-twisters allowing for an enjoyable experience from top to bottom. Pair that with beautifully-crafted environments, vibrant colors, and a compelling story and you have a game that plays and looks great. If the performance was on point, this would have been one of the premier puzzle experiences in the first half of 2020. Still, A Fold Apart is one to pick up and play if you can look past the framerate issues.
A Fold Apart is a short, touching puzzler with a timely message at its heart.
A charming puzzler that makes up for some occasionally awkward design with a simple yet intensely personal and emotional narrative
A Fold Apart has great music and a great art style, but it's too short and its story is too uninteresting. Perhaps if the game spent more time developing the characters, its narrative would be more engaging, but as it stands, it's difficult to recommend it over the many other games with emotional stories out there.
It’s odd talking about A Fold Apart given the circumstances. At present, we are a few weeks into COVID-19 shutdown. Friends and family are separated, and only through technology can we maintain any modicum of a relationship. A Fold Apart feels like quite the reflection of the world today. In it, a couple struggles to maintain their connection despite the vast distance. However, not unlike self-isolation, the game can feel confusing and uncomfortable.
A Fold Apart is a story-book style game about two people that fall in love but are separated by distance, and must reconcile their own feelings and
In A Fold Apart, the puzzles and how you solve them act as a metaphor for the two main characters working through their anxieties about their relationship. The game follows who we’ll call Red and Blue, since they don’t have names and their genders are selectable by the player. Red is a teacher and Blue is an architect. They both live together and are clearly very in love.
A Fold Apart is roughly three hours in length, which, although short, is highly polished and tells the story that it wants to tell in a way that is truthful and fun. In a time when many of us know how it feels to be separated from our loved ones, A Fold Apart provides a wonderful catharsis that celebrates the highs and lows experienced in every relationship.
