The gaming world has been in love with geese for some nonsensical reason ever since the release of Untitled Goose Game. A game which I enjoyed, but I feel like I was the only person in the whole world who thought it was overhyped and overrated… and that’s coming from someone who created a section called “The Wiseau Awards” out of love for borderline stupidity in gaming. Well, it’s time for another goose to take the throne, but this time, one that actually deserves it. There is a bra...
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some wear scars that act as permanent reminders of the anguish that they’ve endured whilst others embody the ideology of heroism through their physique and mannerisms. Okay, Mighty Goose may not be your typical protagonist with his gormless, thousand-mile stare, but this bad-ass bird is a force to be reckoned with.

Mighty Goose is the game I never knew I always wanted. It’s a silly 90’s cartoon homage to Metal Slug. Yet it also does enough that is new to be recognised on its own terms. Joining Untitled Goose Game in the oddly specific “indie games centred around mischievous waterfowl” genre is Mighty Goose, a love letter to classic arcade run and gun games, featuring a bounty hunter goose in power armour for some strange reason. While retro nostalgia is a well many indie developers have drawn from, Mighty Goose fortunately balances its arcade influence with modern game design that makes for an engaging little package that any shooter fan can have fun with.

Unlockable buffs, special attacks, and even partner characters aren’t enough to justify the “Mighty” moniker. While fun for a little while, the repetitive gameplay, short main campaign, and lacking arsenal make Mighty Goose a tough recommendation. The pixel art, soundtrack, and performance are all solid, and the menus and base where you choose your loadout are presented well. There’s also something funny about Goose’s random honks and certain moments when the action slows down and a giant goose pops up in the corner of the screen. If you absolutely need more Metal Slug in your life,…
