On a conceptual level, Umbrella Corps is interesting. I like the idea of a cover-based multiplayer shooter where you have to contend with other players alongside A.I.-controlled undead hordes. I like that the firefights take place in environments pulled straight from the series’ history. I even like the insane movement speed, which results in lightning-round battles. Though these aspects had potential, Umbrella Corps uses them to prove that ideas are nothing without proper execution.

Umbrella Corps is an interesting aberration of a game, coming almost entirely out of left field from a studio not known for games of this genre and bearing equal parts ambition and clumsiness. As a study in game design and franchising it is a fascinating title, and watching how Umbrella Corps grows as the developers add patches will reveal a lot of information regarding the Japanese gaming scene in comparison to the international market. That being said though, this is not a fantastic game by any account and while there’s a little fun to be had in a frantic online match, there are much bette…

What it boils down to is that Umbrella Corps is an interesting idea that had potential, but was ultimately ruined by poor execution. A boring excuse for a single player mode combined with a series of non-complimentary game mechanics have turned Umbrella Corps into its own version of a confused, shambling husk. The game doesn't know what it wants to be, and as a result, this is another lackluster spinoff from Capcom - one we're eager to forget. And judging by the empty game lobbies, we're not alone.

Umbrella Corps has no clue what it wants to be, and that translates into a frustrating, confounding experience. Tiny maps, wildly unbalanced gameplay and a general lack of polish and focus makes this one Resident Evil entry that you’re better off avoiding.

A confused and confusing shooter which can't capitalise on the famous franchise it leans on.

But none of it comes together in a way that is remotely enjoyable. It looks terrible, it plays terribly, the online is nowhere near as functional as it should be and it’s making a mockery of the Resident Evil brand. What were Capcom thinking? We’re not sure. They could have literally dumped a Mercenaries game onto the digital marketplace cobbled together with existing assets from previous games and it would’ve been better than this. I admonish you – seriously consider whether or not you should purchase Umbrella Corps. It’s utterly deplorable and a (sadly) wasted opportunity.

Despite the hit-and-miss history of the franchise, Umbrella Corps is the first time I ever regretted uttering the phrase “sure, I’ll review that Resident Evil game”. It fails as a Resident Evil game so hard Capcom took the name out, and it fails as a multiplayer game so hard it kicked all its players out. You may have noticed that I used the word ‘pointless’ multiple times throughout this review, which wasn’t intentional but sums up the game well. There is really no reason for thi...

Umbrella Corps is a massive disappointment and a stain on the Resident Evil franchise that should be avoided.

By and large Umbrella Corps is a title that, initially, showed promise -- I could definitely have gotten behind the idea of a multiplayer Resident Evil title, as the series has shown can work in the right hands, and the right context (like the excellent "The Mercenaries" mode from previous games). However, in execution Umbrella Corps feels less like a unique spin-off from Resident Evil and more like one of its many undead zombies: lifeless, indistinguishable from those around it, and just waiting to be put down for good.

Resident Evil is celebrating 20 years of zombie slaying and bad voice work. Umbrella Corps was meant to be some sort of love letter to the survival horror franchise, while also capturing some points in the very lucrative co-op tactical shooter market. What we got is a cheap feeling, underbaked cash-in title that could have - Read our full Gaming News on The Outerhaven .
