Summary: MADiSON is an astounding success in the horror genre, especially for someone who doesn’t play many horror games (me). The game was well put together and delivered on the spooks, however some puzzles are rough to figure out and could have been a little less obscure.
Created by just two developers, MADiSON surprises and excels as a psychological horror videogame. MADiSON has a lot working for it making it a contender for the best horror game of 2022 and one to put on your radar if a fan of the genre. Let's find out why that is in this spoiler-free MADiSON review.
MADiSON is a genuinely terrifying psychological horror game and does its job very well, making it stand out in the genre on Nintendo’s hybrid platform. Unfortunately, this is dragged down by the poor inventory system and unclear puzzle direction, causing far too much backtracking. Aside from these gripes, MADiSON expertly uses every tool at its disposal to unsettle you and create a horrifying experience I am keen to return to again.
In 2014, P.T. took the video game world by storm as a demo for Silent Hills that featured a haunted house, some mild puzzling and some serious fright value. It was terrifying, and was at least part of the inspiration for a whole new generation of horror games, focused on psychological spooks. MADiSON began its development way back in 2016, and it doesn’t take long before you notice its P.T. inspirations. While that infamous haunted hallway might be a jumping off point, MADiSON combines this...
The horror genre is replete with staple conventions baked in the DNA of the genre. One such convention is the camera that takes pictures, revealing horrific things not seen by the naked eye. MADiSON takes the camera conceit and puts a slight twist on it.
Madison does so much well that it makes genre tropes succeed. From atmosphere to execution, this short horror romp takes you and doesn't let go. It's not without issues, with one progression point halfway through the game lacking the kind of intention and care that the rest of the game receives. Then there's the save corrupting error. However, once that error gets patched out, Madison will have the complete package worthy of anyone up for a good scare.
Although the story doesn't deliver anything fresh, it serves the game well and provides a platform for the game's excellent design and well-crafted horror. Go into MADiSON without any pretense of a groundbreaking story to find a terrifying journey through the minds of pained and neglected killers. Overall, MADiSON is a great first game by a new developer and is sure to provide plenty of scares.
MADiSON is a first-person horror game full of jump scares. MADiSON reminded me a lot of ‘Outlast’ but had some interesting things that separated it, mostly
Akin to liking a nice picture that's out of focus: there's still a special attribute for genre fans to appreciate, but others will be put-off by the inconsistent craftsmanship.Unpleasing as it looks, there is justification for BLOODIOUS GAMES' first effort being titled MADiSON; that said, I'm undecided [...]
While it’s built around an interesting mechanic and features tense, sometimes terrifying moments, MADiSON is frequently derailed by tedious puzzles and an irritating amount of backtracking.
MADiSON is simultaneously one of the most tantalizing, yet enraging horror experiences I’ve ever played. The atmosphere and story are rich and engaging, and the scares are turned up to 11. But the puzzles are so baffling that it’s tough to recommend this game even to devoted horror fans. That said, I’d love to see Bloodious Games take another stab at a horror project with more streamlined gameplay.
If you want haunted, you’ve come to the right place.
