You could say that this Yomawari suffers a little from the diminishing returns of sequels. Each sequel feels less fresh and original than the previous one, and while stagnation might never quite set in (after all, there are a lot of properties that have dozens of titles), audiences start taking the qualities of what these games do well for granted. That being said, Yomawari: Lost In The Dark is such a fascinating, beautiful little horror game. With some smart mechanics, spot-on perfect pacing and atmosphere, and an intense, melancholy narrative this horror experience achieves something rare fo...

Yomawari: Lost in the Dark's core gameplay loop is one that's not exactly brimming with mechanical complexity. But thanks to the impeccable atmosphere, extensive enemy variety, and memorable moments, the game doesn't really need it.

Still, if you enjoyed the first couple of titles, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by Yomawari: Lost in the Dark. It’s a solid continuation of the series, even if it doesn’t hit the heights of Midnight Shadows. The whole trilogy is a unique take on horror, tying in childhood and dumping a whole barrel of relatable sadness. The greatest success the series has had is not just presenting the misery to the player but making them be an active part of it. So, I hope you’re ready to be miserable.

Spooky season had just arrived and, as a resident scaredy cat, I thought it might be fun to dip my feet into a relatively mild horror game. Yomawari: Lost in the Dark reminded me of the classic RPG horror games I played as a teen—Corpse Party, Mad Father, Ib, The Witch’s House—so I thought ‘I can handle this, right?’ No, I was wrong, because for most of the 10-hour playthrough of Yomawari: Lost in the Dark, I was chased by terrifying spirits, jump scared by scarecrows, Slenderman’...

Even with the story not living up to previous entries, Yomawari: Lost in the Dark does a good job continuing the unique horror series. Yuzu is a likeable character and the town she has to explore is nicely designed with a good number of points of interest. The puzzles aren't particularly difficult, but solving them while hostile spirits are chasing after you can add a fair amount of tension to pulling it off. There are even a couple of story choices where the outcome simply can't be known because ghosts are weird and alien, and there doesn't appear to be any right or wrong answer. There are bo...
