The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Trails Through Daybreak is a new starting point for a new, epic arc (with the second chapter already out in Japan). By the end of it, I was not only invested in the new characters and contribution to the Legend Of Heroes history that was being created through their actions, but I wanted to go back and replay all the rest of the games in this series all over again. More than a single game, The Legend of Heroes is an expansive project, and it’s inspiring every time I get to play one.
Ultimately, Trails Through Daybreak 2 ends up being a bit polarizing in terms of its place in the series and as a middle chapter in the ongoing Calvard arc, but its gameplay is so satisfying — including one of the best combat systems in the genre — that it's not a stretch to say that JRPG fans can't afford to miss out on what the game offers, regardless of their familiarity with the Legend of Heroes series and the broader Trails game timeline. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel for the series' mechanics, Trails Through Daybreak 2's combat, progression systems, customization, and breadth of co...
Being a fan of the RPG series The Legend of Heroes, no matter your stage of fandom, is a weird, special little thing. You feel like you’re in your own little silo at times. Despite the fact the series has been kicking on for 35 years now, it has never quite reached the global sensation status of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Still, if you’re attuned to the franchise at all when any new game comes out, long-awaited localisation or otherwise, it’s an event. The new entry The Legend of ...

It feels like forever since we were introduced to a new story arc yet here's The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak and it's great.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak is a fantastic new entry in the Trails series, and while it has some problems, it is amazing on Steam Deck.
When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak serves as a fresh start. Although some locations, characters, and references will be familiar to series fans of the Trails series, there's very little to this JRPG that will make newcomers feel lost.Read More
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2 makes a few missteps with the pacing of its multiversal story, but it puts a focus on quality character moments and impressive worldbuilding.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak serves as an excellent introduction for new players and a warmly received return for those familiar with the series.
Despite my issues with some of the characters, Almata, and the underlying Xipha system, I still enjoyed my time at Calvard, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, and I am eager to return to one of my favorite long-form fictional works.
Historically, it's not uncommon to see Trails sequels launch this soon after the original game and that's also true with the Japanese Daybreak launch. While I didn't expect any sweeping changes given it's a direct sequel, these smaller updates could go a long way in Trails through Daybreak 2. I'm particularly curious to see how the time travel mechanics play out narratively, and I'll be checking out the full release next year.
