If you miss the survival horror games of the late '90s and early 2000s, Tormented Souls 2 is the game you need to satisfy that nostalgia. It's an excellent exercise in atmosphere, level design, tension management, and puzzles that reminds us of everything that makes this genre great.
I'm not a fan of survival horror games. Despite this, I have a certain fondness for Tormented Souls – the game managed to captivate with its engaging puzzles and old-school atmosphere. I've been eagerly awaiting the sequel. Here's my review of Tormented Souls 2.
I love it when newer horror games really delve into the genre’s past, bringing modern improvements and taking the more hardcore design philosophy that really defined the genre. Games like Signalis, Crow Country or even the original Tormented Souls really brought their own twist to what was once a perceiving stale genre. The past couple of months as a whole have been an excellent year for horror games, with Chronos: The New Dawn and Silent Hill f joining together for two back-to-back bangers...
Tormented Souls 2 is an excellent new entry in a budding horror franchise that takes everything that made its predecessor great and builds on top with an added layer of polish.
Tormented Souls 2 is an improvement to the original in so many ways. While its horror elements, visuals, and gameplay are exactly what you want from this experience, the game launched in an underwhelming state plagued by countless bugs and tech issues.
Tormented Souls 2 | Review | Caroline's nightmare continues. Prepare for a new full immersion in the world of classic survival horror.
The homage to horror classics continues its journey with monsters at its back.
The horror gains fluidity and rhythm, even if the shadows of Villa Hess lack boldness.
Resident Evil copy or not, Tormented Souls has rightfully earned its place in the genre. Whether Tormented Souls 2 deserves that honor as well, you can read in...
Despite some nostalgic quirks that perhaps should have remained in the past, Tormented Souls 2 is an atmospheric callback to the iconic adventures that made contemporary horror gaming what it is.
Tormented Souls 2, like its predecessor, offers some solid survival horror action inspired by classics of the genre. Some might find dealing with or avoiding enemies a bit frustrating at times though, and a number of its puzzles could be considered a little too obtuse for comfort.
Tormented Souls 2 is a fun, albeit thematically predictable, sequel to a game that served as a delightfully nostalgic surprise to longtime horror fans. It's abundantly clear that Dual Effect has put their heart into this ongoing love letter to classic survival horror, utilizing elements that few other horror indies have dared to touch in favor of modern playstyles and concepts. Charmingly familiar tank control gameplay, ambitious puzzle mechanics that can still feel a bit too heavy-handed for the average player, and thematic horror elements that do work well for the most part. Like its predecessor, Tormented Souls 2 still struggles with storytelling and character elements that just don't quite hit the mark. While it doesn't go as deep as I would like, above all else, it still serves its grandest purpose with all the passion you could ask for.
Tormented Souls 2 understands what made old-school horror special — it just struggles to recapture why it worked. There’s tension, yes, and style in spades, but also repetition, rough edges, and moments that feel trapped in the past. It’s a haunting sequel with flashes of brilliance, but one too often smothered by its own shadows.
