Almost perfect if not for the nitty-gritty. If it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a short and wholesome 2D puzzle-platforming adventure game that puts players in the shoes of a wolf-turned-princess that wants to right the wrongs for a prince she accidentally blinded. This title's gameplay is simplistic, but it makes way for a beautiful storybook aesthetic and story that will uplift anyone's spirit.

Although much of your 4-5 hours will be spent with this puzzle-platformer gameplay, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince really focuses on its storytelling. After a lengthy opening cutscene, additional scenes come every few levels as the two characters continue their journey and grow closer to one another. The story is its greatest strength. While the fairytale premise might feel familiar, it has a compelling hook: the prince is terrified of the monster that blinded him, and therefore the princess feels she must hide her true nature from him. Their bond and the growing tension due to the princess’s lies kept me invested in the story and hoping things would work out. The gameplay wasn’t particularly enthralling, but the story compelled me to keep playing to see what would happen next.

NIS America is a company that releases games at an alarming pace, but unlike other publishers that focus solely on quantity rather than quality, the vast majority of their output ends up being pretty good and quite varied. Their first 2019 outing, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, is a shining example that the company can do a lot more than just Disgaea games and bringing JRPGs to the West. This is a puzzle platformer not unlike Limbo or Inside, but there’s more to it than just its ga...

The brief length can make it feel a little less ambitious, but I can't say I was let down by this whimsical short story of a video game. Lovely art, a cute story, and solid puzzle platforming help make The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince a pleasant ride.

The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a short side-scrolling action-adventure game with lovable characters and an imaginative plot. Narrated in Japanese with English subtitles, Liar Princess introduces a heartwarming story that captivates audiences young and old. Although it’s not a long game and some of its puzzles can feel repetitive, the games visuals, soundtrack, and storyline really help elevate it to become an eventful experience.

The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince tells a somewhat gentle fable of love and adventure with the underlying darkness you’d expect from a fairy tale, but your overall enjoyment will depend upon whether you prefer story or gameplay.Read More

Ultimately then, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a beautiful-looking game that tells a charming story, but its gameplay is just lacking. You’re likely to fly through it in less than five hours even if certain sections cause you trouble, and there’s little reason to go back –  unless you want to pick up every last collectible for some unlockable artwork. I can’t deny that it warmed my heart after sitting through its credits, but my heart might’ve also sunk at that point if I’d have paid full price for it.

Video games that look like a storybook yet play like a puzzle platformer are nothing new so let's see if The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince has what it takes to stand out in this very specific yet oddly populated genre.

The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a charming platform-puzzler with a captivating fairytale aesthetic that can't help but draw you in. Unfortunately, things take a dark turn thanks to clunky mechanics and uninspired level design. The lore is fantastic and the presentation remarkable, but ultimately, it's hard to come away from this game feeling anything but disappointed.

What with all the complex and grand-scale games that are the norm these days, sometimes you just want to sit back and chill out with a good old fairy tale. The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince  is a great example of one: everything from its title to its charmingly simple characters makes it seem like you’ve settled down with a picture book. It came out last year for Japanese audiences, and has now been translated for the West.
