Tetris Forever Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The video game industry is shockingly bad at preserving its history.
A captivating trawl through four decades of Tetris, with a stack of archive footage and other interesting tidbits, Tetris Forever is also a superlative collection of games and curios that will satisfy all but the most demanding of Tetris fans. Essential stuff.
Tetris Forever cements Digital Eclipse's wizardry over their Gold Master Series. The interactive documentary format they've pioneered makes video game history c
There are few games that have entered the public lexicon as firmly as Tetris... any time someone tries to pack a number of things as tightly as possible it's
While notable absentees and a glaring lack of 21st century representation are hard to miss, Digital Eclipse's third entry in the Gold Master Series with Tetris Forever still stands as a welcome, at times eye-opening, look-back on the legacy of one of gaming's greatest IPs. A staunch reminder as to the simplicity, addiction and clever, mechanical wit at the heart of the falling-block premise. A premise whose game selection, while flawed, still carries with it an interesting look back on the many ways, good and bad, Tetris aimed to evolve and refine itself over the many years. Tetris Forever is a love letter to the cultural phenomenon. Developed by Digital Eclipse as part of their Gold Master Series, this experience delves into the game’s rich history, its creation by Alexey Pajitnov, and its journey from the Soviet Union to becoming a global icon. At first glance, the package appears to cater to die-hard Tetris fans, but its ambitions go beyond nostalgia.
Tetris Forever dives deep into the 40-year legacy of Tetris with a distinctive interactive documentary experience, including a variety of playable Tetris games and a brand-new Tetris variant.
Tetris Forever is a pretty slick package. You learn a lot that you didn't know, and it's cool to know that Tetris will definitely be around if all other games were to go by the wayside. With so many ways to play it, and so many systems, I would've loved to see more of a variation, or versions of Tetris. "Play Tetris, My Friends" is the quote in the opening by Mr. Pajitnov himself. I would, but there's so much Bombtriss blocking the way.
The lackluster lineup of titles in Tetris Forever only adds salt to the wound of having to follow up one of this year's best titles, but the greatness of the story and Tetris itself still comes through.
Digital Eclipse is onto something special with its “interactive documentary” approach overall. Atari 50 has become the standard against which all retro compilations should be judged. Additionally, I appreciate the intent and effort that went into Tetris Forever a great deal. I just hate, so much, how licensing has let everyone involved with this effort down.
Another immaculately researched and presented interactive museum by Digital Eclipse, but one that is missing too many important versions of the game to function in quite the way it’s intended.
