Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
AiAi and friends come to the modern consoles in this all-action extravaganza of unique puzzles and madcap multiplayer gameplay.
Super Monkey Ball series is back and we go over what makes Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD remaster a fun game for fans of the series.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD isn't a perfect recreation of the original game due to some things being improved and others being taken away. The overall presentation is more enjoyable when it comes to the main game, but the massive drop-off in mini-game selection hurts the replay value. With revamped controls, it plays better than the motion control-only Wii original -- but improvements weren't taken far enough. Camera improvements would make the boss battles more enjoyable and motion controls as an option on Switch wouldn't hurt things either. Visually, the HD visuals are a nice upgrade ...
If this had been the first time Monkey Ball had graced our consoles it probably wouldn't have been so disappointing, but it would also be a series that few people would care about.
A welcome revival of a much-loved franchise, although Banana Blitz was never the best entry and Sega has had to accept too many compromises in porting it from the Wii.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD is a respectable entry into its series. The gameplay is as fun as ever, but camera issues and brevity keep it from becoming a true classic.
If you’re an ardent Super Monkey Ball fan then you might want to pick up Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD, but you probably won’t be having the best time of your life with it. It’s a shame that Super Monkey Ball Deluxe hasn’t been given the remaster treatment instead, which amalgamated all the levels from the original Super Monkey Ball and its sequel as well as adding in a smattering of original stages for PS2 and Xbox. That was the ultimate Super Monkey Ball game, and it still is. The new additions here detract from the experience rather than enrich it.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD provides glimpses of the greatness but these are few and far between in a game that struggles to find a solid difficulty curve and provide much else outside of the core 100 stages.
I grew up playing a lot of Super Monkey Ball and its sequel on the GameCube. I have many memories of trying to beat Expert without using a continue, enjoying so
I’ll admit it. I was a proud card-carrying Nintendo Wii fanboy. As such, I felt it was my moral obligation to show as much love to the console’s launch lineup as humanly possible. Part of blind support was my purchase of Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, which, oddly enough, wasn’t anywhere near as terrible as I anticipated. When I learned the game was being ported to modern consoles, I was left a bit perplexed. This was far from what I would classify as a classic, yet for some reason Sega felt the need to bestow this upon the PS4 audience. Can this HD reimagining recapture some of the magic of ...
When I noticed Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD at PAX this year, I was cautiously curious. I’ve never played a Super Monkey Ball game. Not with good reason either, it’s just not something that ever really crossed my mind. The series never appeared on my radar nor anyone else in my gaming circle, remaining one of those games whose iconography was vivid but whose name I could never identify if questioned.
