I don’t know how Nintendo continues to do it, but they’ve managed to reinvent another classic franchise and push it further than imaginable. Super Mario Odyssey is the game that we’ve been waiting to play for more than 20 years. It feels like it borrows key elements from almost every Mario game that has come before it to create what is possibly not only the greatest Mario game, but one of the best 3D platformers of all time.
It's extraordinary, really, that after all this time a new Mario game can feel as fresh as any that preceded it. Cappy is a revelation, exploring Kingdoms is bliss, and Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece.

Super Mario Odyssey is by no means a perfect game -- or even the best 3D Super Mario platformer -- and thankfully the game doesn't need to be. More importantly, Super Mario Odyssey is a bold re-introduction to 3D Mario and one that is flat-out mandatory in 2017. The game is not the challenging, rigorous exercise found in the series' past so much as a deep dive into abject fun originality. Placing creativity and wonder above all else, Super Mario Odyssey is Nintendo's equivalent of a Pixar movie: magical, creative, and captivating, no matter what age you are.
There are few gaming franchises that can stay as consistently relevant and enjoyable as Mario. The plump little plumber has raced go-karts, competed in the Olympic games against Sonic the Hedgehog, and is always down for a party, or two, or eight, or ten.
It's been a long time since I've lost myself in a game to the point that its jaunty tunes are running through my head throughout the work day. Super Mario Odyssey has done that and will continue to do that for a long time. There's plenty to see on this journey, so book a one-way ticket and enjoy the ride.

Once you complete the tasks in each kingdom, a concert will unlock which puts you in a room with the band playing the famous Jump Superstar song. You can move around the crowded room by jumping on people’s heads in trademark Mario fashion, but again there isn’t much to do here. The theater mode lets you watch the opening and closing cinematics through the goggles, but without head tracking. Overall the experience is novel and if you have the Labo VR Goggles already, it’s worth checking out, but by no means should it be the motivation to pick up the VR kit.
Mario proves himself to be a man of many hats in this joyful, enchanting platformer.
Say what you want about the same old story revolving around saving the princess; Mario has been reinvented and updated with a fine brilliance since the chubby plumber first featured on our screens in the early 80’s. Super Mario Odyssey is the ultimate sequel, including the familiar sensibilities that we grew up with and updating it with a mechanic that feels like a logical progression, while also being very inventive.
