All told, Mass Effect 3 is an absolutely amazing game, one that successfully puts a bow on the Mass Effect trilogy while still leaving us hungry for even more. It looks and plays great, but Mass Effect 3's true strength lies in its ability to tell a deeply-woven story. Better yet, the sheer ambition shown by BioWare in announcing an intersecting trilogy complete with save importation becomes fully realized in Mass Effect 3. BioWare deserves applause for not only having the courage to attempt something like the Mass Effect trilogy, but for pulling it off with such exceptional poise and skill.

With a Library approaching two hundred game titles on GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS3 (and even a hand full on PC), to say I have played a number of games is a bit of an understatement.  Of all the games I have played very few have captured my imagination in the way the Mass Effect Trilogy has.  The story of Shepard’s personal struggle to save the universe from The Reapers or the Collectors is a narrative I have fully embraced.  I painstakingly crafted the appearance of my “custom” Commander Shepard when I began the first Mass effect and I carried his “personality” to Mass Effect 2 unchanged.  He made the moral choices, spoke with other characters in the Mass Effect universe, and attacked challenges in the self-same manner I would if I were faced with the same circumstances.  I like Shepard and I like playing as Shepard. In many ways when I play a Mass Effect game, I am Shepard.

Starting with the third game in a series may not seem to make sense, and it could be jarring to some players, but that shouldn’t be enough to stop anyone from experiencing this game. It truly is a work of art made with the eye of a filmmaker, and a testament to what video games are capable of in regards to both gameplay and storytelling. Despite the rare occurrence of frame rate drops, and the stunted online play, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition is a love letter to video game and science fiction enthusiasts everywhere, as it does all it can to please the fans and engage newcomers to its immense and beautiful universe.

Mass Effect 3 is all about the big payoff and no, we’re not talking about its controversial conclusion. Those who’re returning to BioWare’s sci-fi epic will have already invested many hours trawling the galaxy, zipping through mass relays, forming alliances with races from distant worlds and making difficult decisions that linger in the back of your mind as you ponder the repercussions. Before the game’s end you’ll see how the actions of your past panned out – some helping you in Earth’s time of need and others coming back to bite you in your shiny metal armoured backside. Regardless of the result, seeing these investments unfold through the course of Mass Effect 3 is always satisfying.

But when all is said is done, the important thing here is Mass Effect 3 is the close to one of the most beloved new series in this current console generation.

It's a rarity nowadays to actually get that sense of accomplishment without something looming over your head that has you asking what's next, and wondering when you'll get to pay to see it. If Bioware never released another bit of downloadable content or standalone game, I'd earnestly chalk this adventure up as one of the best I've ever taken in a video game world.

Mass Effect 3 is one for the fans, and few who buy it will be left unsatisfied by how the story ends.

Make no mistake, though, this is a port only for the people who haven’t played the game elsewhere. And for all its hype, it’s also not a game for RPG fans. It really is just another great Sci-Fi shooter hiding under the thinnest veil of player interactivity.

The music in the game is arguably one of the best soundtracks you’ll in a game, capturing the emotional intensity of the Reaper invasion perfectly. If you don’t take a chance to stop and listen for a few minutes, you’ll be missing some of the finest scores that this industry has offered yet. Sounds from guns each feel unique and enemies have that satisfying crunch when they hit the ground or explode.

Here we are then. Mass Effect 3 is finally upon us, and this is what it's all been building up to. The last hurrah for Commander Shepard and his faithful crew, as the Reapers threaten humanity and the rest of the galaxy. Suffice to say, BioWare has got its work cut out delivering with Mass Effect 3, as anything less than a heart-wrenching, dramatic and entirely satisfactory conclusion will do. The thing is, you've been working towards this ending with your previous actions, meaning that it's ...
