Marvel's Spider-Man Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
It’s hard to fault Marvel’s Spider-Man as Insomniac has taken their game to the next level. As a developer, they have gone from strength to strength and Spider-Man is a culmination of their past hits. There’s a stunning verticality that compliments the game’s watertight mechanics and, despite the literal boundaries, still makes the city seem boundless. If you’re a Marvel die-hard, there’s enough fanfare here to sink a ship as Spider-Man emerges as the new gold standard. Spider-Man is, without question, the best superhero game ever.
MARVEL Spider-Man is the Game of the Year. The End. Seriously though, MARVEL Spider-Man is right up there as a top contender for 2018 Game of the Year in a field that already has a lot of great games in it. I know this is going to sound very biased…
Marvel's Spider-Man Proves to Be the Definitive Experience for the Web Slinger
Despite a few odd pacing and story issues, Spider-Man is one of the best superhero games ever made.
Insomniac games bring their trademark fun and polish to a fan-favourite franchise with excellent, if predictable, results
Marvel's Spider-Man delivers off the wall combat and a fresh take on the Spider-mythos that should have fans of all stripes pumped. However, if you've already tired of games in the Arkham mold, you'll find little reason to get excited.
Marvel’s Spider-Man has clearly been a labour of love for Insomniac, and each time you play you’ll pick up on the sheer attention to detail they’ve paid to the game. Like the way that if you web a villain to an object you can still then throw that object, with the miscreant still attached. Or that that there’s two sets of dialogue, one for when Spider-Man’s resting and one for when he’s exerting himself.
Marvel's Spider-Man features the web-slinger's acrobatic abilities, improvisation and web-slinging, while also introducing elements such as traversing with parkour, distinct environmental interactions, new combat, and cinematic blockbuster set pieces.
Last, but certainly not least by any stretch of the imagination, is the photo mode in Spider-Man. The brilliant idea behind the concept is that Peter Parker was a photographer for the Daily Bugle before he became a scientist and was hired by Otto Octavius, so photography and Spider-Man have always gone hand-in-hand in nearly every incarnation of the character. In short, the photo mode is excellent, it’s intuitive and using the filters, frames and stickers you can make some seriously fantast...
Verdict: Marvel’s Spider-Man excels not only in its narrative and combat but also in its world-building. The ease in which Insomniac Games hands the Spider-Man reins to players and lets them truly feel like the wall-crawling webhead is exceptional and shows the studio’s care and reverence for the character. Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 will surprise you, delight you, and keep you coming back for more.
In an interview with TIME in 2015, Stan Lee revealed that his publisher thought his new creation Spider-Man was the “worst idea he’d ever had”. No one liked spiders, teenagers should only be sidekicks, and no one wanted a hero with real world problems. Fast forward 56 years and Spider-Man, one of the most recognisable super heroes ever, returns to gaming in Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games — and gosh does this team know how to do our favourite web slinger right.
