Sometimes that subtle approach can detract from progress if you don’t pay enough attention. At the start of being able to control the game, Dr. Vas gave very little direction on how to get moving. The ensuing hour was filled with confusion as I fumbled with different levers, learning through trial-and-error how to interact with the environment, and worrying whether I was overlooking important details or actions I should be taking. In a particular section of my playthrough, Dr. Vas began speaking to me in a region where there was a quicker-paced flow of water blocking progress to the next…
In Other Waters tells a tense, absorbing mystery through exquisitely minimalist means.
In Other Waters plays like a visual novel with more depth and better graphics, which makes it a perfect game for players to relax in provided they don’t mind coming up with how the game’s creatures look by themselves.
In Other Waters’ best quality is just that: it makes you feel like you’re in other waters. It’s a well written exploration game that, while short, provides an interesting story. If this is the form the classic text adventure returns in, In Other Waters leads the charge with its immersive soundscape and imagination sparking descriptions.
With an engaging sci-fi story and its minimalist style, In Other Waters manages to draw you into its mysterious story and brings the alien environments to life through your imagination. There are some performance issues that can detract from the experience, but overall, In Other Waters is a journey worth taking.
Sometimes a game completely catches you off guard. On first glance, In Other Waters from developer Jump Over the Age and publisher Fellow Traveller looks like a cool sci-fi exploration adventure, with a few puzzle elements and a mystery to solve. It looks calming, methodical, and simple – but under the surface drifts an apocalyptic queer love story, ecological terrorism, corporate greed, and some of the most cathartic storytelling I’ve experienced.
Explore a beautiful and mysterious alien ocean in this relaxing sci-fi adventure.
Imagine yourself deep below the ocean surface surrounded by marine floras and alien aquatic life forms. You slip deeper down into the abyss but yet you do not
The hard science aspects of being a marine biologist aren't sexy or fun, but they make for an interesting and completely unique experience.
In Other Waters tells an intriguing tale that will get you thinking, but only if its slow crawl to the finish doesn't turn you away.
Searching for answers is a fundamental part of our being and a core motivator for video games. It provides the impetus to push forward to hopefully achieve a satisfactory end. In Other Waters it is not that straightforward, however. The title’s exploration gameplay can lull, and the end of the story itself – while forming a resolute conclusion – dangles a more intriguing possibility than the one that is actually presented. The journey contains absorbing elements, but is ultimately unfulfilling.
That being said, it is impossible to ignore some of In Other Waters’ most glaring flaws. As much as I’m willing to sacrifice depth in gameplay for a satisfying story, I should never feel frustrated as much as I did while playing this. For those of you who may not be bothered by these issues to the degree I was, I think you will find an engrossing and even satisfying experience. I couldn’t help but find myself excited about what I was going to discover next, but I just couldn’t get pas...
In Other Waters is beautiful, but somewhat clunky and boring.
Now this is something you don’t see everyday. There aren’t many games that give me such a hard time when I try to describe them like In Other Waters does. This is one of the most different and unique games I’ve played in years, but as you may already know, this doesn’t always result in an actual fun experience. So where does In Other Waters stand? Is it a revolutionary artistic achievement? Is it an overrated title that reeks of hubris? The actual answer is: neither. It’s just alrig...
