Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity players will be transported to the time before the Great Calamity happened, participating in epic battles against a backdrop of familiar locations in Hyrule before they were destroyed.
It's always curious to see how a game franchise evolves from its inception to its sequels. Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U was very much a "What If?" kind of game that told its own story for better or worse. But with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, they went full…
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, is a defining example of what you can do with musou games in the right situation. Not only does it shine Breath of the Wild’s enjoyable characters in a new light, but it also provides a new lens to experience Hyrule through. It’s an experience that is as much musou as it is Breath of the Wild, but integrates ideas from both, and melds them in interesting ways that’s guaranteed to please fans of either game type. If you’re a fan of Breath of the Wild, or musou games in general, Age of Calamity is well worth your time and attention, even if the Switch sometimes ...
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, you had one job. One job that defined and justified your entire existence. Deliver on one the most interesting parts of Breath of the Wild, and for me one of the most interesting tales in the franchise. Tell the story about how one hundred years prior, prophecy and tradition finally failed Hyrule. About how everything went Crisis Core: Legend of Zelda Edition. It would have been an epic tale of failure, death, and yet ending with a ray of hope. This was the g...
When the original Hyrule Warriors was announced in 2013, I was over-the-Termina-moon hyped for it. The Legend of Zelda is by far my favorite Nintendo
If you enjoyed Breath of the Wild’s story and characters, and like musou games, this is a great combination of the two that’s worth checking out.
Hyrule Warriors: The Age of Calamity is a great addition to the warriors series of games if you enjoy battling huge mobs of enemies. Featuring great character development for Zelda and doesn’t require playing Breath of the Wild to enjoy. The local co-op is great, but sorely absent in the Divine Beast missions.
It might even be perfect if Link were more than just a generic vessel of badassery. He could be the strong and silent type like Master Chief from Halo, communicating with the same ruthless efficiency he uses to slaughter countless Covenant and Flood. He could even be strange and quirky, but brave and strong like Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII Remake. Literally anything would be more interesting — at least to me — than this lazy blank slate.
Koei Tecmo's Omega Force studio returns to Hyrule for a second time, this entry acting as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Though some things have changed, there's still a very familiar feeling.
Perhaps a lot of my problems extend from my unfamiliarity with the Warriors genre. Everything on display looks accurate, but it’s clear there are several mechanisms missing to really sell the illusion. Age of Calamity tells two incongruent stories: One where we’re constantly on the verge of defeat as Calamity Ganon besieges the land and one where we’re living out an indomitable power fantasy as we cut down tens of thousands of enemies with a single character.
A calamity of disappointmentThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has certainly been one of the most influential titles of [...]
With Breath of the Wild 2 set to release some time next year, it wasn’t too much of a surprise that when Hyrule Warriors 2 was announced, that it would be connected to this newest storyline as a prequel, telling us of the events that transpired before we suited up as Link in 2017’s acclaimed Breath
