Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is among the most memorable, creative, and iconic horror games of the last decade and should be experienced by anyone who is able to safely stomach it.
The Outerhaven review of horror visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club Plus.
As you play through the visual novel and focus on each major character, you’ll unlock new side stories that serve as a prequel to the main story. They show the four members of the Literature Club as they form the club and get to know each other, overcoming conflicts and differences along the way. The side stories flesh out the characters in a way the main story’s format doesn’t allow for, which leads to some truly sweet and heartwarming moments. All together, they provide a surprising amount of additional content and are well worth reading, especially if you were one of the people who wanted to see more of the “normal” side of Doki Doki Literature Club.
When you regularly experience different games and stories, becoming somewhat set in your ways is unavoidable. You know what you like, you know what you don’t;
The original Doki Doki Literature Club is a phenomenal horror title, but loses a lot of the elements that made it so impressive on its translation to consoles.
Doki Doki Literature Club doesn’t disappoint as an off-kilter visual novel. If you, like me, tend to avoid this genre, you might consider DDLC as an exception to the rule if you can handle some disturbing content.
Originally released in 2017, I’d heard whispers about Doki Doki Literature Club. About how it wasn’t the game it seemed to be. About how dark it really was; about its unique twist. But being a PlayStation player, this PC visual novel dating sim eluded my gaze for four years, until a chance email came through my inbox with a review code for the console version. Titled Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, this new version is more than a console port. It’s an expanded version of the original 2017 cult hit.
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is great for existing fans that want to know more about their favorite characters and possibly the deeper universe. However, the paid package doesn’t offer enough for newcomers. In some cases, like the Metaverse content, could even be detrimental to those with no prior experience. Players that were simply looking to go through the DDLC program without the need for extras should stick with the original free release of Doki Doki Literature Club!
Four years ago, Doki Doki Literature Club! (DDLC) absolutely blew up on the PC. On the surface, it’s initially hard to see why. The game appeared to be your average, run-of-the-mill visual novel dating sim. However, take a peek inside and you’ll soon see that things are actually a bit more unsettling than they first appear, whether it’s the misdirecting nature of the narrative or the game’s shattering of the fourth wall. All this time later and now we have Doki Doki Literature Club P...
Doki Doki Literature Club was one of the most unexpected games of the past decade. From its quirky, romantic, visual novel story, to the dark twists and turns it takes, this blew up way bigger than anyone could have expected. Although not reaching the levels of Five Nights At Freddy’s due to the style of game, everyone who came across Doki Doki Literature Club fell in love with the characters and aesthetics. As you do with games that garner such unexpected adoration, we now have an updated ...
It has been nearly four years since Doki Doki Literature Club took the Internet by storm. Originally released as a freeware game on PC, the game garnered a cult following, with fans begging for a sequel ever since. While Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is not a sequel, this new version aims to bring the core game to consoles for the first time, while adding some zest for veterans of the original.

For all I’ve written above, Doki Doki Literature Club really isn’t really interested in being a game. It’s more a kind of interactive essay, which isn’t about presentation values, beyond their ability to enhance the bait-and-switch that sits at the heart of the subversion. The four girls in the game represent various tropes that are common enough to dating games, and the narrative itself works hard to give you the impression that you can “win” with one of them, effectively possessing them as is standard for the genre. This is something that Doki Doki’s developer clearly struggles…
