Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is an action RPG with everything: slick combat, great writing, and Estelle Bright on the warpath.
Brigandine Abyss is an exploration in grueling tactical gameplay and a narrative that feels a bit out of focus.
70s style Robot Anime Geppy-X brings the cult classic game about playing through a fake super robot show to the global stage.
Moonlight Peaks is a solid, spooky farming game with strong characters, classic gameplay, and a slightly buggy execution.
The characters are well-written and engaging, from troublesome Little My to morose Misabel and ever-finicky Fillyjonk. Moomintroll himself is quite a sweet protagonist, but his isolation leads him to show more sides of himself. It’s interesting to watch him slowly grow as he encounters brand-new problems.
Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, it also has some rather glaring flaws. One major gimmick of Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta is the Map of Celceta. As you explore, Adol fills in the map of the area in more detail. You’re rewarded for...
Tombwater
All in all, Tombwater is one of my favorite Soulslikes, if not one of my favorite games, period. I’m not usually a fan of Zelda-likes, but I could barely put this one down. And only part of that was because I kept getting lost and wandering into a new miniboss...
Despite the plot focus, it’s full of fun character interactions. The choice to make managing your chosen ninja’s health a major mechanic intrigues me. Self-destructive warriors are not good at determining what’s good for them. Players must choose when to accept their wishes and when to push back for their...
The game’s most frustrating moments for me came when it prompted me to do something without including the button. I got very confused when asked to use the darkness spell to go invisible, for example. And the platforming puzzles became exponentially more frustrating as they got more complicated. The swimming...
All in all, R-Type Delta: HD Boosted is a glorious blast from the past that takes no prisoners. If you thrive under pressure and enjoy memorizing level layouts, this is the game for you. And if you don’t, give it a try anyway. It’s merciless, but incredibly engaging.
From depression to alcoholism to the horrors that once tore down an alchemy-using civilization, Ryza’s world has a lot going on. That Ryza and her friends try to greet each day with a smile despite this is a sign of strength. Ryza’s development from a stubborn teenager to a burnt-out...
Wander Stars
The narrative isn’t the strongest, but it is entertaining and delightfully cheesy. And while the battle system has its flaws, collecting words and stringing them together is very fun. If you get softlocked, you can replay an episode with different words.
