Viewfinder Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
This game deserves a review which provides the fewest spoilers possible. It’s called Viewfinder, and it’s one of the more interesting puzzle games I have played in a long time.Read More
A mind-bending puzzle game that survives the transition to Switch with its soul – and its magic – intact. Essential playing for anyone who likes to look at the world from a different angle.
Much like games like Portal and Blue Prince before it, Viewfinder is a puzzle masterpiece that is appointment gaming for absolutely everyone.
It must be fiendishly difficult to design a puzzle game like Viewfinder. Sometimes, it is all I can do to wrap my head around it. It takes an inconceivably mad genius to come up with this game conceptually. Some of the challenges totally consumed me. Others were dealt with simply. While solving each I was struck with a question: In the face of sharp gameplay, does a puzzle game need an additional something? Perhaps not!
A picture might be worth a thousand words, but stepping inside a picture is worth so much more. In what is the best puzzle game of the last decade, Viewfinder places theatricality, in the form of its mystifying world and its inventive systems, at the forefront of the experience.
Viewfinder is an inventive puzzle game allowing you to change your environment to create something new. There are enjoyable puzzles and innovative set pieces which enhance your enjoyment. One world is a steep learning curve which dents an otherwise pleasant journey which has excellent presentation. The story has great art design and voice work, where the games mechanic is great to see in action.

Viewfinder is a fun puzzle game bogged down by its ambitions. I loved the way in which the game uses the gameplay to speak for itself. At the same time, whenever the characters started speaking I was kind of turned off by the experience. The Nintendo Switch version runs fine enough, but can have a bit of a hard time with the framerate and loading of stages. For puzzle game die-hards, especially fans of Portal, The Talos Principle and Superliminal I’d recommend Viewfinder in a heartbeat. But if you’re hoping to find something beyond that incredible viral video, I’m afraid that Viewfinder…
Viewfinder is a brilliantly creative puzzle game that constantly forces you to think outside the box through level design that never fails to impress, and a gameplay loop that is fun from start to finish. However, the lackluster narrative, irritating dialogue, and major softlocking glitch prevent it from being truly great.
Viewfinder is a short, but sweet mind-bending puzzle games that is perfect for the Steam Deck.
When first starting the game, it is clear that while there is a story to be followed through gameplay, this is more of a level-based game with a primary focus on just creating interesting and weird puzzles. Aside from the talking cat character, there really is no reason to dwell on any part of the storyline in particular. This is not a bad thing, as the levels themselves can more than carry Viewfinder with how interesting and immersive they are. Players are forced to create their own solutions to puzzles rather than find the one that the developers force on them, and even though there likely i...
