Mugen Souls Z makes the mechanics and the gameplay more understandable and less harsh for trying to have fun. Having it be uncensored and on the Nintendo Switch also helps out quite a bit! I recommend this game to all fans of the JRPG genre that doesn’t mind a little steamy fan service in their games.

Greatly improved technical performance and streamlined gameplay helps make the sequel the best the series has been.

As much fun as it is to play, the sad irony of Mugen Souls Z is that it is best played by people who hadn’t experienced the original, but the only people that could possibly be interested in the game must have played the original. With the first game escalating the narrative and character development arcs as far as actually possible, I can’t help but think Compile Heart would have been better served with an entirely new cast.

Mugen Souls Z features a vibrant, free-roaming battle map, unique turn-based combat, and massive amounts of customization to quench even the most hardcore RPG fan's thirst.

There aren’t many games as unusual as Mugen Souls Z. Its main character is a young goddess who carries around a coffin, not for any reason in particular, just because the writers needed some kind of container and that seemed to make sense. That’s not the weirdest thing that you’ll see either. Charged with “cuteness” and a little too risqué for its own good, this is a game that’ll leave you feeling a little creepy. Earning the Platinum may get you put on some sort of list.

Daubed in a vibrant hue of anime splendour, Mugen Souls Z is colourful yet basic in appearance. Environments are varied yet flat and with little sense of interactivity. Character models also lack detail when compared to their hand-drawn dialogue portraits. This inconsistency is further let down by the game’s generally poor frame-rate with music and sound effects doing little to balance the score.

Mugen Souls Z, is a Switch port of the 2013 original that provides a turn-based combat system, worlds to explore, and some pretty controversial fan serive that culminate in a game that simply isn’t fun and is one hell of a grind.
