A Plague Tale: Requiem Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
A massive step up from 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence in every possible way! Expanding the world and characters without losing its' heart. A true shining light for single-player linear games.
Asobo Studio’s A Plague Tale: Innocence captivated players in 2019 with a surprisingly deep, dark storyline that no one expected out of a brand-new IP. Its gloomy, gritty atmosphere paired well with the grim tale of Amicia de Rune and her little brother Hugo, both struggling against overwhelming odds to escape the Black Plague, known as the Bite. It’s a bleak yarn steeped in terrifying moments as two young children struggle to survive in the rat-infested French countryside. Now, it’s been given a sequel in the form of A Plague Tale: Requiem, a follow-up that’s every bit as great (and in some w...
A Plague Tale: Requiem takes what made the first game good and improves upon that. If you can handle the constant stealth sections, this game is for you.
A Plague Tale: Requiem doesn't drastically alter the foundation set by Innocence, but by iterating on its strengths as a character-driven fable within an oft-ignored historical setting, Asobi tells yet another tale to remember.
A Plague Tale: Requiem is an engrossing tale about a pair of siblings trying to survive the horrors of the Inquisition and hordes of hungry plague rats. It boasts a strong linear narrative with engaging characters and challenging stealth puzzles. Strange character animations and limited combat hold it back from being best in class.
When it first released in 2019, I was surprised to find how quickly A Plague Tale Innocence grabbed my attention. It wasn’t something I imagined myself investing in, but the unique combination of an overwhelmingly horrific plague besieging a country (how sheltered we were) contrasted against the deep interrogation of a brother and sister’s relationship evolving as they themselves changed, provided a unique experience that no other game was even tackling.
Several issues gnaw away at Requiem's greater potential, but its panoply of technical and creative positives connect consistently enough to thoroughly appreciate Amicia & Hugo's rat-ical journey. Reviewer's Note: This review contains FULL SPOILERS for A Plague Tale: Innocence and MODEST SPOILERS for Requiem. I'll [...]
A Plague Tale Requiem had been one of my most highly anticipated games of the year, and despite suffering from major performance issues, the game is an absolute delight to play from start to finish.
A Plague Tale: Requiem is a sequel that refines what came before, offering just enough tools and new mechanics to bring a much-needed freshness to its gameplay. While the game does suffer from a few technical issues, it is nonetheless a gorgeous and often top-tier product.
Developed by Asobo Studio, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a stealth-based action-adventure game following the surprising success of its 2019 predecessor, A Plague Tale: Innocence. While the sequel meets and exceeds expectations in many areas, it unfortunately stumbles significantly in others.
A bigger, bleaker sequel with hauntingly good art direction, but storytelling holds this biting medieval adventure back.
