Green Hell is a fantastic survival experience with an exemplary sense of place and peril. Creepy Jar have really nailed the feeling of loneliness and despair that true isolation would lead to and married this to some well balanced challenges and a refreshingly user friendly approach. The range of ways to play are really welcome and should ensure that even those players who may be turned off by the rigours of hunger and thirst mechanics can enjoy the immersive jungle experience. This may not be a welcoming jungle, but there’s plenty of fun and games to be had.

A survival game set in the depths of an Amazonian forest sounds like a perfect game for VR, right? Green Hell is the latest game full console game that has made a transition over to the VR space. Initially launching in 2019, after a year long run in early access, it received a solid following much like its closest counterpart, The Forest. Green Hell VR makes a very successful transition to the VR space, but it’s not without its issues.
Green Hell is the latest PC survival sim to arrive on consoles, and it brings a solid and challenging survival experience that requires whits and perseverance.
The best way I could describe Green Hell, and specifically, its story mode would be a first-person take on 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot. I say that because in that story Lara was learning how to survive in a harsh environment against hostile locals. And Green Hell at its core is pretty much the same, minus some of the heavier supernatural bits.
Green Hell at times struggles to tread the fine line between realism and fun, but still offers a solid hardcore survival experience.
Green Hell not only captures the spirit of the concept but makes it fun in ways that aren’t truly conventional. There’s no carrot on a stick, but every morning that you’re still alive feels like an accomplishment. Building a half-decent shelter will take ages and tons of effort, but when it’s finished you realize you built it while contending with a hostile environment that tried to kill you every step of the way. It feels really good.
