Packing some serious challenge, Vambrace: Cold Soul grips you with atmosphere and gorgeous visuals, even as the combat isn't as deep as it could be.

If you don't mind being actively abused and tortured for hours on end, Vambrace can become extremely addicting for fans of either Darkest Dungeon or classic SNES RPGs.

After struggling with the early segments of Vambrace: Cold Soul, I eventually found a successful set of party members and a viable strategy for arriving at and conquering each area boss, which bolstered my resolve to see the game through. Once it clicks, Vambrace becomes a fun and brisk experience that trades in the desolation and grind of Darkest Dungeon for a more compact and less replayable adventure. There are costumes to earn from sidequests and achievements to earn that unlock in-game art, but there’s no new game plus to expedite the process. That said, there are a few times when you g…

In Vambrace: Cold Soul, the player follows Evelia Lyric in her quest to fulfill her father’s wishes to reach Icenaire. Unfortunately, Icenaire is surrounded by a magical wall that causes instant death to those who try to enter. Lyric’s father has given her a magical vambrace that allows her to enter the frozen land. Once she arrives on the other side, she falls unconscious in the snow but is found by a guard patrol. When Lyric regains consciousness, she is interrogated by the locals who believe her to be a spy but manages to convince the townspeople of her innocence. It is here that she discov...

Vambrace: Cold Soul is a hard game to review because it had no interest in whether I liked it. It has no interest in whether you’ll like it. It’s one of the meanest, most spiteful games I’ve ever played. Should it concern me, then, that I had fun with it anyway?Read More

Vambrace: Cold Soul is by no means a bad game. It’s far too derivative and simple to reach the same league as Darkest Dungeon as a classic, but it’s an enjoyable time waster, with superb production values and neat, clean, classical turn based combat action. The best way to play the game is probably on the Nintendo Switch, too, since it’s the kind of background noise that works while you’ve got the sport or a movie on TV.

Sky-high ambition meets sub-par execution in this roguelike fantasy-epic. Vambrace: Cold Soul delivers a large helping of worldbuilding but fails to provide engaging gameplay to accompany it.

But while you can enjoy a movie like King Kong purely on visual merit, tuning out the work as a whole in order to enjoy a load of massive cool stuff flying around, it’s harder to do that with a game. In a film, you sit still while the world moves past you, while in a game, it’s the other way round. To keep the beauty coming, you have to stay at the controls, pushing through the world yourself. And for that to be feasible, playing has to be fun. Vambrace is not.
