Guilty Gear has always been massively underappreciated as a fighting game series. The franchise, which first threw punches on the original PlayStation all the way back in 1998, has steadily accumulated an incredibly loyal fanbase over the last couple of decades, but it's never been able to crack a more mainstream crowd. And that's a real shame, because Guilty Gear, at least in its more recent forms, should be revered for its artistic achievements and engrossing gameplay.

However, if you give it chance you will undoubtedly come to love Strive for what it is and not for what it should be. The heart of the Guilty Gear franchise beats strongly in Strive, showing in it’s insanely fun gameplay, and lavishing visuals that puts this as one of the most well crafted fighters to date.

Due to an incredible lineage of games, Arc System Works is renowned for being one the greatest developers in the fighting genre. Recently gaining mainstream success with Dragon Ball FighterZ and BlazBlue, the company has decided to revisit a fan favorite: Guilty Gear. Although it has a strong cult following, the franchise has never managed to replicate the success of its peers and due to this, has maintained a niche title. Looking to obliterate that is Guilty Gear Strive, the most accessible release in the series but will it be able to appeal to both veterans and newcomers?

If I was looking for an on-ramp to understanding Guilty Gear or even one-on-one anime fighters, this is the game to do it with; and what’s here looks ready to act as a platform for more to come, as there will no doubt be balance changes and new characters to come. I can lament what it might be missing, but Guilty Gear Strive is also what I needed right now: a good, solid, very online-capable fighting game with plenty of big swords, charging dolphins, and doctors with questionable credentials to go around.

Some lobby and connectivity quirks aside, Guilty Gear -Strive- is a remarkable achievement in the fighting game genre by Arc System Works.

The action is gorgeous, too. Once you’ve seen a Guilty Gear battle opener, where you get a beautifully cinematic short cut-scene of the character striking a pose as the camera swirls around in dramatic 3D pace, then you’ll wish every fighting game did better in setting the scene or each battle. The battles themselves play out on a 2D plane, but the backgrounds are beautiful, the character animation is unparalleled, and the fireworks are appropriately firey.
