Professional reviews from gaming critics
Still, it’s beautifully produced and absolutely in line with the way that Jansson’s Moomin works ran. They’ve always left me wanting more, and I can’t wait until the next Moomin game comes my way.
Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is a short and sweet game that is beautiful to look at and play. The journey through Moominvalley and the characters you meet make the entire experience worth it.
The new adventure takes Moomintroll on a winter of exploration, puzzles, and encounters, reinforcing the importance of friendship in overcoming challenges.
Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is about how small acts of kindness can drive out the cold and the fear that comes with it. It’s about opening your door and asking someone how you can help. While Moomin starts the game as a scared child, he discovers the warmth and joy that community can bring, but only when brought together through kindness.
Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is like a cosy hug and a kiss on the head after a tough day, with gorgeous visuals and excessive charm.
The characters are well-written and engaging, from troublesome Little My to morose Misabel and ever-finicky Fillyjonk. Moomintroll himself is quite a sweet protagonist, but his isolation leads him to show more sides of himself. It’s interesting to watch him slowly grow as he encounters brand-new problems.
Whether you're familiar with what a Moomin is or not, Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is a wonderfully cozy winter adventure that stands on its own in providing a relaxing and silly narrative with cute puzzles and quests. Based on Tove Jansson's Swedish fairy tales, the whimsical characters in this game have appeared in previous games, books, comics, a TV series, and animated films. However, you don't need to have seen any of that to appreciate this charming game.
The Moomins franchise, created by Finnish author Tove Jansson, is a fascinating case of being a slow burner success. For the first, say, fifty years or so of its existence, it was a hit amongst Nordic children. But come the early 90s, an animated series made in Japan made the franchise popular in other European countries, as well as the aforementioned Japan, and the franchise hadn’t lost its steam ever since. After a well-received game released in 2024, Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley (whic...
Hyper Games explores the world of the Moomin again in Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth.
Moomintroll also becomes a trifler. With the controller in hand, we guide him on his caretaker and community organizer journey. No domination or mastery of others is wanted nor rewarded. Productivity is thrown out the Moominhouse window. Simply embrace the pleasant northern winds blowing from yonder. But please make use of that borrowed scarf from Too-Ticky and the mittens from The Ancestor. It is cold ass hell outside.
Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is a relaxing and moving adventure game that people of all ages and all levels of Moomin fandom can equally enjoy. The abundance of fetch quests can wear a little thin, but the presentation and enjoyable exploration throughout the title make it a worthwhile experience.
