The journey was hard, but it's about time you relax. Take a dive into CreoWorld, a theme park full of animatronics that have gone to hell, just like everything else. The first major DLC for The Surge has been released and with it comes new enemies, new loot, new environments, and a new boss to defeat.
Whereas The Surge managed to get the basics of Dark Souls right but failed to make either the enemies or world interesting, A Walk In The Park corrects this problem (for the most part). The idea of a sci-fi Souls game was cool but setting it in a Disneyland-style theme park is clever and done pretty well. It’s very much Itchy & Scratchy Land from The Simpsons, with killer mascots and murderous jolly robot parades. Things get ridiculously tough towards the end and the game starts to forget a...
There were difficult games before Dark Souls came along. At least I think there were. It’s all a bit of a blur.
Exoskeletons, dismemberment and robots - if those things along with Dark Souls-esque action-RPG gameplay make up your type of video game, The Surge serves it
This lack of variety in environments and enemy encounters sadly came to define my experience with The Surge. A science-fiction setting holds so many possibilities for environments and enemy variety, but The Surge falls back on minor variations on similar themes throughout the game. Combat is mechanically sound – while the enemies you fight won’t be particularly interesting, the choices you need to make about targeting, battle style, and taking up risky opportunities for gear advancement keep the combat engaging in the moment.
The Surge is a properly realized, and distinctive game inspired by Dark Souls. Unfortunately, the inconsistencies in the mechanics and graphics departments produce some rather glaring issues.
I'm pretty mixed when it comes to The Surge. It does some things right while dropping the ball elsewhere. The high price point is also a downside. If you really need something to scratch that Dark Souls itch, The Surge should fill that need. Still, I'd recommend a sale or price drop.
The grind through The Surge is a long one that is not always rewarding, but the game has enough original ideas to make it worth checking out for fans of Souls-like games. The Surge delivers an intriguing sci-fi world with dark themes and should satisfy any genre fans looking for something to play now that the Dark Souls series has ended. Just don't pick up The Surge expecting a game that is as polished as From Software's flagship franchise.
The Surge is great, and I say that with only a single qualifier - It’s standing in a genre built by games that did more than great. Which isn’t exactly fair to hold against this game, but if you’ve ended the age of fire, woke from the nightmare and torn through Japan, The Surge is going to scratch, if not satisfy that itch.
A substantial expansion to an overlooked gem, A Walk in the Park is perfect for veterans and newcomers alike. The Surge getting an expansion is good news on two levels. First, it means more of the game — [...]
I will say, as of this review some of my issues with the game have actually been fixed in a recent patch, such as the armor set that’s meant to give you protection in poisonous environments now actually giving you that protection and various other technical glitches I had encountered. It’s nice to see that Deck13 was quick to jump on the various technical issues and balance fixes the game needed.
