If you imagine a cross between Civilization and The Settlers... you would be someway towards an idea of what Before We Leave is like. It's post apocalyptic
Before We Leave’s jolly vibes and streamlined gameplay makes squashing a naked revolution a real treat.
Before We Leave is a relaxing take on the post-apocalypse and city building, with enough benefits to overcome its hiccups.
Before We Leave is a city builder/4X game that debuted on PC and Xbox a couple of years ago. If they missed it before, PS4 and 5 owners now have the chance to get their controllers on this chill little sim. But should they?
Before We Leave is an extremely pleasant city-builder that gets caught up in its interface and ambitious scope. It is a combination of having limited real estate to display a lot of information, and then picking all the wrong information to show in that space. When you’re not wrestling with it, the actual moment-to-moment gameplay is very satisfying. It looks sharp and sounds fantastic. There are some hurdles to make it over, but it is hard to deny the underlying charm of Before We Leave.
Overall Before We Leave is somewhat of a middle-of-the-road city builder with some lovely concepts and a relaxing vibe. It doesn’t nail everything it tries, but overall it’s an enjoyable experience. The non-combat approach could’ve been executed better at times, with more challenges thrown at the player. Meanwhile, the small hexagon islands can be enjoyable for people who like some puzzles in their city builders, while for others they could feel a little limiting.
It’s such a shame that that serenity is broken by frustration when trying to plan roadways and neighborhoods. This may not seem like much of an issue for some, but for someone who finds odd satisfaction from having complete control of how my society will look, it kept me from falling in love.
What if the post-apocalypse was fun? Not the apocalypse itself, mind you, but a period after, when the survivors emerged and things were mostly OK? That's the case with the city-building sim Before We Leave...until game-breaking bugs spoil the good times.Read More
Before We Leave is a non-violent 4X strategy game that is perfect for newcomers, but its lack of challenge and overly simplified mechanics will leave genre veterans bored.
