Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
This is a shorter review, but there’s not much else to say. This is a genuinely well-written, complex, literary-quality mystery horror story that will teach you something about Japanese ghost storytelling traditions and does an exceptional job of highlighting one of the country’s more interesting, if less-visited, locations. It’s filled with intelligently structured and rewarding puzzles, and the gorgeous art really makes the atmosphere sing. I’m so very impressed that Square Enix has seen the value of these visual novels, and happy that they’ve been such creative successes. With any…
A new adventure in a mystery anthology set in Japan follows the inhabitants of the Ise-Shima region through a series of bizarre events.
Featuring a new setting, folklore and cast of characters, Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse is a mystery/adventure that presents a new “Curse” for players to uncover.
Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse is just as interesting a game as its predecessor, and the island setting and its folklore is fantastic.
Humanity has always been fascinated by the supernatural. Tall tales and legends persist through the ages, passed down through tradition and storytelling, for many reasons, whether parables, entertainment, or sometimes, bearing shreds of a greater truth. Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse is steeped in these concepts, throwing the player into an enthralling rural mystery filled with murder, betrayal, love, and curses.
I was enthralled by the mystery and story of PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse. If you like mystery stories with a supernatural twist, I can recommend this game without any doubt. The cast of characters is a lot of fun, the ways in which the story unfolds are cleverly done and there’s even a dash of meta elements that make the game a lot more memorable. As a newcomer it has made me very excited to go back and experience the first game in the series. It has also added Ise and the Mie prefecture on my must-visit list for my next trip to Japan. I really cannot ask for much more than that. W…
It's always a little disconcerting when a game tells you straight up to play the last entry in the series before you start, and Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s
Even though I haven’t played the original PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, I heard some many great things about it from my late colleague, Fernando Da Costa. When I heard about a sequel to Square Enix’s critically acclaimed visual novel, I figured now would be as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about. Was PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse able to wow as much as the original, or does it sink to the depths of mediocrity?
It’s spooky rather than scary but with a great script and characters, and some smart puzzles, this is a must-play for anyone who enjoys the kind of stories only video games can tell.
Swapping J-horror for maritime mystery, The Mermaid’s Curse remains a cerebral treat with its clever encyclopedia-led puzzles and atmospheric 1980s setting.
The second Paranormasight installment tones down a bit of the horror elements relative to its predecessor in exchange for being a more involved puzzle-solving game, and more importantly, it is still a great time.
