Professional reviews from gaming critics
Danganronpa has been one of the most unexpected success stories of the past few years. They’re weird, they’re morbid, they’re the kind of thing that has traditionally been very niche outside of Japan, and yet, the Danganronpa games have sold over 5 million copies worldwide. You’d think Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka would latch onto the series for life, but after producing a couple sequels, he instead opted to branch out with the new studio Too Kyo Games. After putting out a couple smaller experiments, Kodaka has delivered his first major Danganronpa successor, Master Detective Archives: ...
In 2010, Kazutaka Kodaka gave birth to a franchise with a pretty controversial premise – teenage murder. I’m referring to the brutality that is the Danganronpa trilogy. You know the deal; students known as Ultimates are trapped and need to kill to escape. Honestly, it’s a deranged, yet intriguing concept. Kodaka-san has other projects that he has done but nothing of similar quality. Then in 2023, he craved success, returning to the topic he knows best – slaughtering anime characters. ...
Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE is a murder mystery game developed by Too Kyo Games and Spike Chunsoft. Following a detective who made a pact with a death god, it can be seen as a spiritual successor to Danganronpa. However, there are many differences that may turn potential players off or on to this new venture.
Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is a great game that really goes deep into each of its cases to prove who the real culprit is, sometimes to a fault. The Mystery Labyrinths can tend to go on for a bit despite knowing who the real culprit is halfway through and Shinigami's sense of humor can get a tad annoying at times. It also doesn't help that after going through a few hours of how the crime was committed, you then basically get to relive the entire crime two more times which at that point just feels like the game is padding itself. Overall though, if you're up for solving some mysteri...
As we present final arguments to a court overseen by a busty death god, the detective gameplay, captivating characters, and enticing plot serve as compelling evidence for recommending Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE. Pacing and loading issues aside, the signature brand of storytelling that made the Danganronpa trilogy so refreshing is on full display here. I genuinely grew to adore the pairing of Yuma and Shinigami by the game's end, and that’s a testament to how well both characters are written and voiced. There are some rough patches in this murder-filled mystery adventure, but it's a…
At its heart, Master Detective Archives is a story-based game, especially as it acts as a visual novel for portions of its runtime. If you can be patient and enjoy the slower sections alongside the fast-paced ones, then you’ll find a lot to love in this game. It’s a shame Master Detectives Archives doesn’t quite nail the gameplay/story balance. Still, the process of actually solving the crimes and conquering the Mystery Labryinths manages to carry the parts that drag and make for a sati...

Every time you think you've got it all figured out, the storyline seems to always go in a completely different direction, with enormous amounts of twists and turns.

We want to emphasize that 5 will always be the “average” number, not 7. So by far, it’s 50% great and it’s also 50% bad.
