Neon Chrome is a well-designed game that finally makes its way to the Nintendo Switch. Developer 10tons has delivered a great port of the title; the gameplay, graphics, and co-op hold up well. Despite some framerate issues, this remains another competent indie game for Switch owners to get their hands on.
Of the different kinds of Nindie titles that have come to Switch this is definitely my favorite genre. I’ve started to become picky about what I play though as there’s been a lot of roguelike titles released, almost to the point of saturation. Initially it didn’t feel much different from some existing games I played until I started to realize how much freedom the levels allowed. After discovering new power ups and developing new strategies I became addicted to dethroning the Overseer. If you’ve been initially turned off of the genre because of the permadeath nature and potentially low…
It’s nice and refreshing to get a roguelite that is actually engaging, fun, and has a wall you can throw yourself at until it crumbles. In Neon Chrome, you can expect hours of chaotic and destructive fun as you fight your way up a series of floors on your quest to stop the overseer, and it never seems to get dull.
Neon Chrome makes good use of the cyberpunk setting, but remains light on story. While the grind is real, the game shows real promise in couch cooperative play. If twin-stick shooters are your thing, you could do much worse than Neon Chrome.
If you've been gaming for a while then you've probably played at least a few twin stick shooters. Neon Chrome is an ambitious roguelike that puts you in a dark futuristic world but how does it fare in such a crowded genre?
Neon Chrome does a lot of things right, and I was impressed by the overall feel of the game which is both solid and visceral. The graphics hold up well in the isometric view and the bright and shiny visuals are certainly a pleasure to look at, while the tactical shooting and use of perks offers a different challenge each time you play. The trouble is that is is all marred by the agonisingly stubborn lack of checkpoints and forced restarts which, for me, definitely didn’t add to the experience. This aside, the fun you can have means it’s worth investing a little time to save Neon Chrome, especi...
Tron meets the bullet-hell genre in this top-down twin-stick shooter where no encounter is exactly the same as the last.
When you’ve died a couple of times and experimented with the wide variety of unique assets, you’d think the game would throw a different kind of curve ball somewhere down the line; that never happens. This did not, however, dampen the excitement one bit. I was just as head over heels after three hours as I was in the first couple of minutes. If you’re into the 80’s neon-filled culture and new wave music, then Neon Chrome might just very well be the perfect little game to play over the weekend!
Set in a dystopian future, Neon Chrome is a top-down roguelike that will task players with blasting their way through floor after floor of guards, weapons, and
Neon Chrome isn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it may not grab you if you've played anything of the same ilk.
All in all, it’s great and on-point without being too one-dimensional. That feeling this game gives to the players every time they discover something new, may it be cash from slain enemies or secret rooms to further progress through the game’s level, makes them want to stay immersed for hours on end. Though minor flaws are inevitable, at the end of it all Neon Chrome can and will still give you your money’s worth once you start playing. ‘Nuff said.
