Unity may have the intention of being Assassin’s Creed’s next-gen reinvention, but it’s remarkably faithful to its roots.

Take to the streets of Paris and experience the Revolution, assassin style.

Unity is an impressive technical achievement despite its issues, and it is certainly a significant step forward for the series as a whole. The difficulty of combat encourages use of the overhauled stealth system, perhaps signalling a shift towards a real focus on stealthy gameplay in the series, which is certainly exciting. And on top of that, it’s utterly gorgeous almost all the time.

If you can put up with the stuttering performance and some comically ridiculous bugs (my favourite was an assassination target moon-walking backwards into my confused assassin’s cavalry sabre) then there’s a decent Assassin’s Creed experience to be found in Unity. The fact that it’s never more than decent makes those glaring technical issues much, much harder to excuse. Despite some good ideas and an entertaining tale, this isn’t a revolution for the franchise. Considering the hype ...

Unity plays well, but it’s not really good enough for a AAA-game to play well, and this especially applies to Assassin’s Creed, which has always been a franchise with stronger narrative and thematic value than its counterparts. I see potential in a Napoleonic-era trilogy for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As I wrote in my Rogue review, I’d love for the next game to star a Cossack doing his thing as Napoleon bears down on Moscow. But for the next one I would hope that Ubisoft puts more effort into crafting an interesting and original narrative than working on the multiplayer nonsense.

From the storming of the Bastille to the execution of King Louis XVI, experience the French Revolution as never before, and help the people of France carve an entirely new destiny.

Assassin's Creed Unity is a beautiful game, but lacks any major improvement or unique feature that the other Assassin Creed games are known for such as Black Flag's sailing or Ezio Auditore’s double hidden blades. Instead the technical hiccups and elimination of previous gameplay elements leave the game empty, with an elegant coat of paint. It doesn't move the franchise forward story-wise and adds more questions. Unity is a dazzling game, but isn't a revolution for the series.

The Assassins Creed franchise is in a desperate need of a break, as well as a complete overhaul. With the previous entry in the franchise Black Flag we did begin to see some much needed changes and Unity does continue to bring some of the desperately needed changes. Of course with these changes does come their problems, namely it could be challenging for long-time fan of the franchise to jump into this entry with an overhaul to the combat system among other things, though it also is the changes that put this game on the much needed path the franchise desperately requires.

The biggest change in gameplay in the game is an optional one, but co-op is one of the strongest additions the franchise has had on a multiplayer front in a long time. Providing players with both regular missions and co-operative heists there is a good amount of content to explore together. Navigating missions often requires communication between players in order to be played through properly, and it’ll be a good idea to strategise you’re approach when heading into heist missions. Along with this you’ll also be able to explore the open world together. These missions can be quite a lot of fun, ...
