The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is an absolute pleasure and a strong continuation of Activision's commitment to remastering classic games. For those who grew up with or loved the old Spyro games, I can't imagine you won't find yourself engrossed in the collective quality of these remasters. For those new to the world of Spyro, this game is a winner even without its history. Plus, a very attainable set of achievements (or trophies) means you can earn yourself some rewards along the way.

Taking off the nostalgia goggles for a moment, Toys For Bob have done a brilliant job in revamping a classic trilogy of games. In updating the visuals and tweaking the controls, they’ve stayed true to the source material and crafted an experience so involving that you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a brand new game. Initial viewings had me concerned that they might not be able to live up to the hype; but on playing the game, for the briefest moment I was eight years old again – and I enjoyed every minute of it.

It's hard to believe that the original Spyro the Dragon released 20 years ago but it's great that we have a brand new remastered version of it along with its 2 sequels to celebrate the purple dragon's legacy.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy feels like a game straight out of the late ‘90s because, well, in most ways it is. This could be seen as a good thing, as this type of 3D collectathon has been overall absent from gaming until very recently. In addition, those who grew up with the original trilogy will likely receive a healthy pump of nostalgia from receiving nearly the exact same game they remember from their childhood. Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a wonderful love letter to a classic series, keeping everything that made the original games what they were, but slapping on a fresh coat of paint for the HD era. There are a few creaking bones showing their age here and there, but only due to the developers’ desire to keep things as accurate as possible. The Switch version looks absolutely stunning and runs surprisingly well, so if you’re looking for a classic 3D platforming experience, you should definitely give this a look-in.

I have fond memories of playing Spyro The Dragon on the original Sony Playstation at my neighbor’s house as a kid. But I didn’t own a Sony console until the end of the Playstation 2’s life-cycle, so I missed out on completing a lot of classic Playstation games, including Spyro. Thanks to Spyro Reignited Trilogy, I had the chance return to the childhood I left incomplete.

Perhaps some of the ideas and features presented in Year of the Dragon could be expanded on in a brand new Spyro the Dragon adventure, and it would be interesting to see what developer Toys for Bob could do if it decided to revive the series proper. If nothing else, the studio's excellent work on Spyro: Reignited Trilogy shows the franchise in good hands, and a new game could address some of the poorly-aged elements and other fan complaints, like the the Reignited Trilogy's lack of subtitles.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a faithful recreation of the original three Spyro games for current gen consoles. Toys for Bob was able to get the look and feel of Spyro down while adding a cherry on top bundling it all together and creating a new and improved soundtrack.

There aren't a ton of games that can make a two-decade jump and remain unscathed, but Spyro Reignited Trilogy does just that. While it won't do anything to challenge the status quo of gaming, no one says it has to. This is a game made for you to unwind with and is a great pick-up-and-play game in between more time-intensive titles.
