Funk of Titans Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Zeus created funk music, and humans dance and sing to thank Zeus for this blessing. Pagan Titans are using other rhythms to turn humans into dancing minions. Zeus summons you, his son Perseus, to defeat the rest of the music Titans.
Funk of Titans is a game that kept my interest for a while, but ultimately it fails to deliver much beyond a few hours of play. The game is easy to play and get into, but there’s not much variation in gameplay. New weapons and gear that can be unlocked are fun, but don’t factor in all that much on how the game is played. And while the concept and ideas are fun, Funk of Titans never seems to go the extra mile to make the game a memorable experience. There could have been so much more to the game, but in the end all that’s left is a title that’s fun to play for a few hours, but not reall…
Funk of Titans feels like a free game you’d download from the app store to kill a few hours and then delete the same day. If it was free, then you could justify the short repetitive gameplay and clunky controls, but given that it costs £4.99, you’d be better off buying a book or a few CDs, both of which would last a lot longer and will give you more enjoyment.
Funk of Titans wants to draw players in with an outlandish, seemingly arbitrary aesthetic that mixes Greek mythology with funk music. Unfortunately, it fails to go all the way with this theme, and ends up a tedious and surprisingly generic auto-runner.
For almost the entirety of the two and half hours it took me to complete Funk of Titans, I was bored. The world design is awkward, and for a game about music, it lacked a variety of catchy tunes or even appropriate themes. I chuckled a bit at the silly hats and weapons, and some of the final levels showed a spark of life, but Funk of Titans is ultimately an unsatisfying experience.
Funk has a wonderful diverse background. Greek mythology is full of stories. Yet this game draws on none of the good. Funk of Titans is an endless runner, a genre of games that seems to have oversaturated the market in recent history. It doesn’t provide anything out of the ordinary or unexpected. And in the end, the platform it is available on did it more harm than good.
Chris: I would be okay with never hearing “Daddy-o” ever again. But yeah, there aren’t many runners on consoles, and the genre deserved better. They can be special at times and at the very least a fun time waster, but funk this.
Funk of Titans isn't funky, fresh, or even fun. Unless players really want a short, mobile game like experience then they should avoid this game completely.
Funk of Titans feels like a game that would be perfectly at home on a mobile device, which isn't surprising given that this is the studio's first console title. That isn't to downplay the importance of mobile gaming, or to overlook the great strides that mobile games are taking of late. Rather, it's to declare that this is an overly-simplistic and undercooked game that isn't what you'd expect from a console title at this price point. This is far from an unplayably awful game, but there's very, very little depth here, and what is presented is incredibly repetitive to say the least.
Looking beyond the intricacies of the premise and the music genre usage and it being a fairly short game, Funk of Titans is pretty much an a-ok game for its price. Overall, being a runner game, it does offer a quick challenge for those that are into the genre. The side objective of perfecting the stages is really not that hard to do but it definitely adds a couple more hours of play time. Also, the references and the humor used was light and it added to the whole fun feeling that it tries to give out. Funk of Titans is definitely a must-play that we recommend.
