Divinity: Original Sin Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
When a title gets a grand number, it’s a video-game worth spending your whole life in.
Last year, Divinity: Original Sin was one of my favourite video games when it released. The new Enhanced Edition reminds me why, but it it not content to simply sit back on prior success. Meaningful changes were made in thousands of large and subtle ways, and the result is one of the best RPG experiences that can be found on either PC or console.
Divinity: Original Sin was a breakout title for Larian Studios, showing it had some truly great ideas and concepts for redefining the modern RPG. Divinity: Original Sin 2 improves upon every aspect of the original title and delivers a classic fantasy tale alongside unparalleled customization and impactful player choice. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the true modern successor to the heralded Baldur’s Gate II.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is one of the best story-driven CRPGs of late and the year has not been shy of them. For me, it hit certain marks that Tyranny or Tides of Numenera might have missed. Perhaps, it is the ability to plunge into the co-op and share the usually single-player high-quality RPG experience in a much more nuanced way than just by words or via streaming. The atmospheric soundtracks, fully narrated and voiced epic story, deep characters (you can romance your companions, too! Bew...
Magic, somebody used to say, is a sword without a hilt: there's simply no safe way to use it. In the world of Divinity, Sourcerers, powerful individuals who can wield the Source to perform otherworldy feats, have been revered once, but following the death of the Divine Lucian, they are being hunted, as using the Source attracts the Voidwoken, hellish creatures that can bring about the end of the world. To prevent this from happening, Sourcerers are being tamed, stripped of their powers: one of these Sourcerers is the main character of Divinity: Original Sin 2. One of these Sourcerers is you.
No game has captured the nuance of pen-and-paper RPG quite like Divinity: Original Sin 2. Every moment is filled with meaningful choice with real consequences, and every character has a story to tell. In an RPG landscape where dialogue options are dumbed down, and quests have become package delivery to a specific map coordinate, Divinity: Original Sin 2 stands out as one of the best RPGs I’ve played in a decade...maybe even longer than that.
Divinity: Original Sin is an action/RPG featuring cooperative multiplayer, a full adventure-building toolset, incredible freedom in character development and a ton of other features.
Divinity: Original Sin; the game you never knew you needed.
Technical issues aside, this enhanced re-release of one of our favorite games of recent memory is worth a buy.
Divinity: Original Sin is a classic RPG from top to bottom. Unfortunately some of those older elements could have used some extra polish and improvement. However, for those looking to relive the glory days of PC RPG's this is the game for you.
Successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns can bring out the best and worst in man. Larian Studios aimed to be more divine than sinful in delivering on its promises, and maybe the original sin here is that publishers won't fund traditional-style computer RPGs anymore.
If there's ever been a time to throw out the words "Indie" or "Developed on a budget" then now is the time. As it proves that time, effort, fan feedback, and passion, are more important than high budgets, annual recycling, scripted Hollywood aesthetics, and glorified tech demos.
