Sunderfolk Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Sunderfolk is the debut game from Secret Door and Dreamhaven. It expertly facilitates a TTRPG experience for a group of four players, using phones as controllers. It perfectly balances accessibility and depth, making it easy for new players to jump in and tactical veterans to find a challenge. The few weeks I’ve had Sunderfolk for review have been some of the most fun multiplayer experiences I’ve had in years. I look forward to playing a lot more.
Players start with three Skill Cards that serve as moves, gaining six more increasingly powerful ones over time, though the game limits how many they can bring into battle. Trinkets, weapons, and foods all also impact each fight and can be altered between missions to better suit what’s next. Some beverages give protection from lava or fire, for example, which can be great before certain environments, and trinkets can be used once per battle and do everything from weakening enemies to teleporting players across the map. Intro and Gameplay Full disclosure here, I am not much of a TTRPG player. Yes, I’ve been dabbling on and off for years with various DnD type computer games ranging from casual to semi hardcore. Yes, I’ve just recently delved into my first foray into a live DnD game from a very good DM that filled t
Sunderfolk is a shared turn-based tactical RPG adventure where your phone becomes the controller. Inspired by gathering around a table with friends, it is built with a couch co-op experience in mind. Up to four players adventure across the magical and dangerous Sunderlands. PC version reviewed. Review copy provided by company for testing purposes.
For some reason or another, a tabletop game night might not work out for everybody. Maybe there's too much hassle in setting up and cleaning when it's all over. It's possible that the whole group can't make it out. Perhaps there are only a few minutes to spare in a busy week. For those people, Sunderfolk may be the next best thing. The teams at Dreamhaven and Secret Door have put together an admirable facsimile of a cooperative tabletop experience, one packed with comradery, laughs, and adventure.
Sunderfolk pulls off a balance of depth and accessibility that few titles do. With its responsive and intuitive smartphone controls and fun co-op strategy, Sunderfolk offers something special, well worth adventuring through.
Sunderfolk isn't great if you play it on your own, but the experience with friends is fantastic and memorable.
A review of Sunderfolk, Secret Door’s debut title that is full of fun and hidden depth, but misses some opportunities.
Still, Sunderfolk is best enjoyed with friends, whether it’s online or on the couch. I’m looking forward to furthering my adventures with this game on Switch. It’s an incredibly neat idea and concept that feels right at home on a Nintendo platform. When I can navigate adult life to get a regular group together to play through this, I’ll hopefully be back with a scored review.
