Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Overall: 9/10: If you personally can deal with the fact that the bulk of your time in Ground Zeroes will be playing the post game then I can highly recommend this game with no caveats. Alternatively if you’re not a big fan of the series but want to get into it, I would not recommend this game as a starting point. The price point is a bit steep for only mild interest if you’re on a tight budget, but if you have a couple extra bucks to throw around, this game comes highly recommended from a long-time fan of the series.
Ground Zeroes is an interesting game to score. The way that it has been presented is to show off the features of the FOX Engine, and each mission is clearly designed to showcase some new gimmick or other. And yet, it doesn’t feel like a demo. Although I do feel the main mission is too short, it feels like a stand-alone experience that will connect to something much greater in the future. My only gripes with Ground Zeroes, a prequel, is its length, so you can only imagine the game changer The Phantom Pain will be.
“Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes offers a promising taste of freedom, but there’s not much meat to feast on here.”
Ground Zeroes provides the player with a decent amount of content and a great stealth playground.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a stealth action game, the first open-world installment in the franchise, set following the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and featuring Big Boss as the protagonist.
If you're a fan of Metal Gear Solid, than you've come to the right place to get your bite sized prologue to Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain in Metal Gear
This short length of Ground Zeroes is definitely a downside, but consider this: would this style of gameplay hold up after 20 hours? It might be too soon to tell, but the structure seems like a radical departure from what made Metal Gear Metal Gear. Action purists will no doubt love its combat-centric gameplay, but those looking to wax nostalgic with a MGS title from 2014 best tread with caution.
As per usual, the sound in MGS is top notch. Guns have a kick, ambient noise makes you stay aware of your surroundings, and when things go awry the soundtrack does a damn good job making your situation feel all the more dire. Now for one of the many Elephants in the room, how’s the voice acting? I’ll say this now, by no means is Kiefer Sutherland doing a bad job as Big Boss. There was no point where I thought it was totally egregious. That being said, Snake doesn’t really talk much. Certainly not enough to decide if I’d prefer Kiefer Sutherland over David Hayter, let alone adjust to the change...
Can the stealth series that sold the PlayStation 1 still hold up today?
