Rather than waiting impatiently for Hollow Knight: Silksong, you should play Nine Sols, a Taiwanese Metroidvania that just got ported over to PS5. I’ve spent a lot of time recently re-discovering my love of the Metroidvania genre by digging into lesser known titles like Ender Lilliies or Pronty but Nine Sols sparked something inside me. It rekindled what was a smoldering ember to a roaring fire. The beautifully realized Taopunk world, and chess-like combat are a match made in heaven. It's entirely possible that Nine Sols might just end up being my favorite title of 2024. It's simply that good. While it may not be an incredibly innovative experience, it is an incredibly refined one. If you are an action fan, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. Nine Sols may not be perfect, but it's very close to it.

From RedCandleGames, Nine Sols is an indie Soulslike Metroidvania. At this current point in time, that exact combination of words feels anything but unique. The indie scene, though brilliantly diverse and innovative, is chock full of games trying to establish a new spin on seamless exploration and punishing combat. Many try, some succeed, and perhaps far too many fly under the radar. Nine Sols, steeped in its own unique, Chinese-inspired mythos, unquestionably stands out.
