As someone adamant about avoiding playing Gacha games and never really enjoyed the story of Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail, I was reluctant to try Zenless Zone Zero. However, Zenless Zone Zero is everything I wanted from a Gacha game.

Zenless Zone Zero offers a fun combat system with a variety of gameplay options. I was impressed overall with the game's music, environments, and art direction. This is a game I expect to return to for years to come, even though I don't consider myself a Gacha fan.

Zenless Zone Zero had the potential to be another well-rounded game by HoYoverse, but its development ultimately felt rushed. While I loved the idea behind it, I could only admire a few aspects, such as the combat, city design, and art style. Aside from these, it was an underwhelming experience for me. I often criticize the current state of Genshin Impact, apart from the Archon quests, but Zenless Zone Zero despite being new is already lifeless.

Hoyoverse recently released their latest entrant into the pantheon of prolific Anime-style games with Zenless Zone Zero on July 4th, 2024. The nostalgia-inducing, story-driven gacha hero collector has taken the tried-and-true Hoyoverse monetization model and transitioned it to a fast-paced fighter. Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) has many similarities to other popular Hoyoverse titles, but will the differences be good enough for it to stand on its own?

Smaller in scale than HoYo's other gacha games, Zenless Zone Zero is off to a good start. While the game suffers from pacing issues and a lack of variety, the combat is excellent in ZZZ. It helps it's backed up by an intriguing story and solid gameplay.
