Yesterday Origins

Overall, Yesterday Origins is simply charming, and the developers have shown a real understanding of how to make a point and click game stand out in its genre. It manages to deliver an interesting plot while giving you a whimsical adventure using the simplest of tools. This is the point and click genre developing in the most intriguing of ways, without losing the magic that makes us love them in the first place. Without a doubt, Yesterday Origins is a must-play for any fan of the genre – and a good starting point for those less acquainted with classic adventure titles.

Since the dawn of time, humanity sought to extend the natural duration of life as much as possible. While there would be some definite benefits, living forever isn't all well and good, like one single look at Yesterday Origins' protagonist John Yesterday suggests: immortality is actually a terrible burden.

Imagine if every time you died, you came back to life the same age you were when you first met death, and lost all of your memories. Not to mention there's also a theory you may be the devil's son. Well, that's John Yesterday's life in a nutshell. So what better time to explore it than where it all began, and what has led up to today. All round, it’s a solid point and click adventure game that combines that familiar old-school formula with a couple of clever quirks. It has a decent story to boot as well, though there are slight issues with pacing, both in terms of the how the narrative unspools combined with some of the more obtuse puzzles. Together, these create a barrier that will stump players while ultimately holding Yesterday Origins back from greatness.

Yesterday’s Origins doesn’t attempt to change the formula of the point and click adventure and that’s okay. The story is delightfully bonkers and it looks pretty, but if you dig deep there’s some repetition, some odd stylistic choices and you might not recall it in years to come, but it’s nice to see such a game on Nintendo Switch.
