May it be the likes of Shadow of the Colossus or Metal Gear Solid, if it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

Spell slinging and roguelike action seem like they go hand in hand right? Indie studio Contingent99 thought so, and their release of Wizard of Legend cements the notion that they grasp just how well this combination works. Game: Wizard of Legend Platform(s): PC (reviewed), also available on Mac, PlayStation 4,…

Fiercely fling fireballs and intiate icicle impalements in the wizard-combat, dungeon-crawling, rogue-lite Wizard of Legend! The frenetic indie powerhouse is the center of our review of the PC version, now available on Steam!

Wizard of Legend is a fast-paced, 2D dungeon-crawler where you assume the role of a powerful wizard on his quest for fame and glory!

Stepping into the museum for the first time was like entering Disneyland. Your character wraps themselves in a colored cloak as they take their first tentative steps into the museum, alongside dozens of other excited patrons keen on seeing the artifacts and arcana of the wizards of yore. The wizards of legend, if you will.

There are so many great indie roguelites that it's almost becoming obscene. But that doesn't change the fact that Wizard of Legend is simply great fun, with an awesome couch co-op mode, and loads of replay value. Its difficulty can spike at odd times, and some spells seem utterly useless. But beyond that, there's just a lot of fireball hurling mayhem to be had as you try to pass the trials.

Wizard of Legend is a satisfying and thoroughly challenging roguelike with plenty of arcana to discover, relics to purchase, and several ways to help players feel as though they're customizing the game to make it totally theirs. With online and couch co-op, you can share the adventure with your friends, which makes adventuring throughout the Chaos Trials even more fun. I enjoyed my path to becoming a powerful wizard very much, though it may not be a game for the less patient. It's a long way to the top if you wanna kick butt and take names...at least in Wizard of Legend, anyway. But it's so, so worth it. Try it and you'll see!

Wizard of Legend offers an extremely enjoyable battle system and many customization options, all presented with great pixel art and enjoyable sound design. While the lack of variety in environments and enemies is a big downside, Wizard of Legend plays like a charm and makes you want to come back for more.

Running through procedurally generated dungeons as a magic-casting wizard who moves like a ninja sounds pretty awesome. However, does Wizard of Legend provide a satisfying roguelike dynamic? Crack open a spell book and let's find out.

At the end of the day, Wizard of Legend is a totally fine arcade-style dungeon crawling roguelite. It’s not near the top of the genre, or even near the top of the genre’s Switch representation, but with the fun two-player experience, it’s a respectable addition. If you’d rather sling spells then shoot guns, dance among the dead, or jump around, Wizard of Legend is a good game to pick up.

I want to love Wizard of Legend. It‘s a fun, fastpaced beat-em-up with lots of replay value, gorgeous pixel art, and an incredibly deep combat system. But the frame skipping I encountered made playing it an exercise in frustration. If the issue is ever sorted out, I’ll give it a more enthusiastic recommendation. For now, I just wish it played more smoothly.

I always enjoy checking out the newest releases on the eshop as I've discovered some fantastic games I've never heard of. Upon one such search, I found Wizard of Legend. Despite its unoriginal name, it looked interesting and so I gave it a shot.

Wizard of Legend is a good, if lopsided game. The moment-to-moment combat is highly flexible and seldom anything less than satisfying, especially in co-op. It's just a pity that while your arsenal of spells and artifacts is massive enough to be remixed a thousand ways, the maps, bosses and enemy types only fit together in a handful of configurations. If you can overlook the repetition in targets and mix up your own playstyle, this one's an easy recommendation, but for players who stick with the tried-and-tested, Wizard of Legend can slip into monotony.
