It's hard to express just how much I adore Undertale without spoiling anything significant, but that's what I love about it. It tells its story in such a dynamic way, and with such a great understanding of the RPG player’s mindset, that it couldn’t have been told in any other way. It's a masterfully crafted experience that I won't forget any time soon.
When I first played Undertale in 2015, I was largely skeptical. The amount of praise that was showered upon Toby Fox’s Earthbound-esque role-playing game seemed unbelievable. Could this game that wasn’t even on my radar a month ago really be the best game of the year?
I find it difficult to be critical towards anything about Undertale because it was designed with such a deft hand. It's simply hard to find anything that feels out of place because it all feels so intentional. I'm happy I can finally confirm that Undertale is not just hype and while it's available on PS4, PS Vita, and PC I couldn't recommend it more. If you're a fan of RPG's or somebody who values a deeper experience, I think you'll appreciate how beautiful this game can be.
Undertale is a prime example of what videogames are capable of as a storytelling medium.
Undertale‘s soundtrack is easily one of the most memorable to grace a video game in recent years. While some of the calmer arrangements are audibly inspired by games such as Pokémon, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy, the more intense battle themes and boss tracks give off something of an Anamanaguchi vibe. Each song perfectly encapsulates the emotion of each fight, whether it’s an exciting random encounter, a silly dating-”battle” with a friend, or an intense final battle to the death. After finishing the game, every single combat theme was permanently ingrained in my head, alongside the calmer...
Undertale, in its short lifespan, has already reached near legendary status. Unless you’ve been paying absolutely no attention to anything, you’ve heard a lot of people talk about the game, but if, like me, you’ve never had the chance to play it before, the console release might be the perfect time to see what the fuss is about.
Going through the experience today, it’s easy to see why Undertale was the talk of the town two years ago. It’s not an overly long playthrough, but it’s an impactful 7+ hours. A slow burn that starts off cute, but builds up to an absolutely thrilling last couple hours. I’m not sure if the Pope has gotten around to playing it yet, but he would be doing himself a disservice if he hasn’t.
Loved by PC gamers since its launch in 2015, now the unique and eccentric Undertale has arrived on the PlayStation 4 and Vita, bringing a whole new world to console adventurers everywhere.
Creator Toby Fox said that he was influenced by a number of different franchises whilst developing Undertale, along with the silliness of internet culture. Regardless of these influences, he’s managed to create a game that’s already a classic. There’s quite simply, nothing like it. Fox has thrown his own sense of humour into the mix, creating a cast of unforgettable characters that you develop a real bond with, and a battle system that calls into question the very nature of a fight. It’s not afraid to challenge convention, chucking all sorts of random surprises at you without a care in the wor...
Undertale has personality in spades, paired with one of the most unique hooks in recent history. Those looking for something new need not look any farther - Undertale is your game.
Undertale review. The game which proves graphics don't define quality.
Undertale is a superb indie role-player that proves once again that it’s not graphics that make a game entertaining but gameplay and great ideas.
