The Autobots and Decepticons are at war yet again and Transformers: Battlegrounds is quite a cool SRPG that fans of all ages can enjoy.
As a turn-based strategy game primarily aimed at kids, its hard not to view Transformers: Battlegrounds as anything other than a success. It’s streamlined, but not so much so that older Transformers fans won’t be able get a kick out of the action, especially if they crank up the difficulty. And while its presentation isn’t the best, it’s bold and colourful enough to excite its target market. Add in the fact that it’s somewhat budget priced, and you have a game that should prove a hit with younger Transformers fans, and a good introduction to the turn-based strategy genre.
Transformers: Battlegrounds is a simple and functional tactical combat game starring Optimus Prime and Megatron which is very good. What’s very bad is that it looks last-gen, has a jaggedy curve with minimal overall challenge and doesn’t shout ‘Play me!’ too often. If you’re ok with that, then you have a few hours of relaxing fun ahead of you.
An XCOM–styled Transformers game has such promise. A large roster of bots, a hidden base to upgrade and customize, and a campaign against always invading Decepticons. A game like this could capture the feeling of the franchise better than most that have tried. Being perfectly fair, Transformers: Battlegrounds was never advertised to be this game. Transformers: Battlegrounds is a moderately enjoyable but largely forgettable game.
As an added bonus, Battlegrounds is fully featured, with all kinds of bonus modes to go with the main narrative. Throw in the breezy presentation and highly accessible gameplay, and it makes this one of the more distinctive and thoughtful efforts to capitalise on what XCOM pioneered. However, I will say that the Mario and Rabbids game, with its wild sense of fun and genuinely original approach to everything from the tactics to the world-building, is more creative and far more refined, but for a game that could have gone so, so wrong, Battlegrounds proves itself nicely.
