Tomb Raider is an amazing game. It is a perfect way for the series to be re-introduced to gamers, as it depicts a very likable heroine who truly struggles to survive, emotionally and physically. The overall experience wanted me to jump straight back into the campaign the moment it ended. Lara is back!

Crystal Dynamic does a wonderful job with the new Tomb Raider.

Lara is back and she’s more human than ever in this origin story that matches its cinematic atmosphere with intense action, great exploration features, and even more fluid controls.

Like the many successful origin stories of contemporary film franchises — Batman (with the Dark Knight Trilogy), Iron Man, Star Trek and even James Bond (with Skyfall or Casino Royale) — Tomb Raider grasps the notion that with great risk comes great pliability. The reward only comes after molding a character (or characters) who reconciles with their frailties and emerges from adversity both stronger and more sincere. Lara Croft achieves this by paralleling her eager discovery of Yamatai to her earnest discovery of self. Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are justified in calling Tomb Raider a rebirth, not a reboot, and it’s just as fun to play as it is to comprehend.

The origin story of the sleek, sultry, ass-kicking Lady Croft has been in need of telling since we were first introduced to the short shorts wearing tomb raider over a decade ago. As fun as it’s been travelling to ancient ruins across the globe taking down hordes of hunters, mercenaries and the supernatural, the reasons behind the fearless femme fatale have been unknown to us – until now.  As someone who is generally unenthusiastic towards reboots, I have to say my jaw dropped when the Tomb Raider trailer was unveiled at E3 two years ago. It just made sense, given the recent trend in humanizing iconic pop culture figures like Batman and James Bond. For the first time though, we’re taking the journey through the eyes of a female, something that carries the risk of being melodramatic or cliché. As an action-adventure loving female myself, I was not disappointed. Despite the infamous “mis-speak” by one of the game’s developers following a certain QTE shown in one of the earlier trailers, I never felt Lara’s gender was exploited for cheap story development. I was involved every step of the journey, and found great satisfaction in watching her grow as a survivor and adventurer.

Tomb Raider is a fantastic addition to the Croft catalog and a fine rebirth of a classic character. With a great story, sumptuous visuals and meaty combat, this is one game you can't afford to miss out on in 2013.

The comparisons between Tomb Raider and the Uncharted franchise will likely rage on between fans, but the simple fact of the matter is, that Crystal Dynamics has built a better mousetrap and iterated on the formula.

This reboot has been the best thing that happened to the franchise and I'd say they even earned a new fan. I like this new Lara Croft--backed by incredible production values and a motivated team.

Tomb Raider could so easily have gone wrong, and its opening gambit looks like it’s heading down a most erroneous path. It starts off with some ambushing QTEs and absolutely pummels Lara Croft into the dirt to such a degree, you’d almost suspect the developers were getting off on it. This first impression is an awkward obfuscation, however, one that soon erodes to reveal a savvy, thoughtful, and above all, immensely enjoyable game. In fact, I’m happy to go on record as saying this is the best Tomb Raider game I’ve played. Tightly produced, competent in both its puzzling and its combat, this is one reboot that manages to be unequivocally superior to its predecessors.

Tomb Raider is not a brave game. Nor is it one that’ll likely live long in the memory, but while you’re walking in Lara’s muddy size fours, it is spellbinding.

Surviving against all odds.

Armed with only the raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Tomb Raider delivers an intense and gritty story into the origins of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor.

Stranded on the mythical island of Yamatai following a freak storm, 21-year-old Lara Croft's career as a videogame protagonist begins with suffering. In the opening hours of Tomb Raider she is stabbed, burned, drenched, assaulted and almost freezes to death: that's if you're doing well, meeting the demands of every linear climbing section, gunfight, finickety stealth sequence and quick-time event

It’s a shame to see the trend of poor game-to-movie adaptations continue with a character as great as Lara Croft. In this new Tomb Raider origin story, Lara’s singular drive to find her father falls flat because their relationship isn’t interesting, and that failure is compounded by a lackluster story and characters. The MMA-style fight scenes and her more adventurous action sequences do give Alicia Vikander a great chance to show off her physical prowess, but without a convincing motive, Lara comes across as shallow. A few interesting puzzles and death traps are too little, too late to save Tomb Raider from mediocrity.

Tomb Raider is the game i’ve been waiting for this generation. Everything about it is amazing and anybody with a 360, PS3 or PC needs to play it. If you’re new to the series then you’ll definitely have a blast with this reboot and if you’re a series veteran, you’ll still love it but most likely for different reasons than usual. It’s still early in the year but this is going to be hard to top.

Flawed as its presentation of the young Lara story may be, Tomb Raider is a great game first and an interesting story second. The latter certainly stumbles frequently throughout, but I was never put-off enough to actually stop playing - chiefly because the gameplay I was indulging in was so persuasively fun. That’s what matters in the end.

However, if you missed out last year and need something to play on your shiny new hardware, Tomb Raider is still an excellent action game and — in its new form — a great visual showcase. And while the two releases are otherwise mechanically identical, if pressed, we’d recommend the PS4 version’s generally better performance.

If you analyse every entertainment industry out there, one thing is very clear, and that’s that each industry has its very own leading lady. The music industry’s is arguably Madonna (bear with me here, as this is all going to be rather subjective), the film industry’s is the one and only Dame Judy Dench and books have JK Rowling, obviously. She’s sold more books than Jesus. And video games? That’s an obvious one. It’s quite clearly Link from Zelda… what’s that? That’s a dude...
