This is the Police 2 is an impeccably grim view of the modern police force. It deconstructs and subverts police genre stories with a protagonist that offers no remorse and warrants no redemption. It does this while providing an intriguing and vibrant cast of characters and a rewarding gameplay loop. It isn't perfect, but it certainly should not be missed.
Few stories in games can successfully make me hate the “protagonist” and at the same time draw me compulsively further into the events and plot twists. Paired up with the simplistic and impressionistic art of the story frames, the atmosphere and the complexity of the intertwining yet opposing factions bandying for influence over hopelessly corrupt Jack Boyd and you have a Noir story set in the 80’s that could rival the classics.
This is the Police 2 is a video game buffet that offers samples of many genres. Generally solid, it is hobbled by poor quality tutorials and a feedback loop that is hard to escape.
This Is The Police 2 proves to be a challenging management simulator with a dark story that sometimes gets a little long-winded. A few hiccups hold it back, but fans of the genre will enjoy it all the same.
You better have to choose if it’s worth spending your spare cash, because it might not be the game for you and it might be for others.
You are Police Chief Jack Boyd, your wife has just run off with another man (much younger than you) and the corrupted Major of the city of Freeburg has just
I appreciate This is the Police II in that it tries to be a more ambitious game than the original. It still carries aspects from the first game that I liked, such as the atmosphere and narrative. But between the sharp increase in difficulty, juggling the various gameplay elements and the long-winded storytelling, it simply isn’t that fun to play. Sometimes trying to do so much dilutes what you’re trying to accomplish, and This is The Police II is a prime example of that.
A competent sequel that adds some neat touches, but doesn't fix enough of the first game's problems.
Of course, there’s always the option to start blazing away. The downside is that a single hit can be fatal, but that’s pretty much it. This small town isn’t touchy about cops blazing away, so if you think the boys can win, you may as well let the bullets fly. There’d be something compelling in a more realistic police game (since those have existed) where a regular patrolman going Rambo would trigger a ton of investigations and paperwork, but this isn’t one of those. Pick the wrong battle and your coterie of jerks may be down a few jerks, but that’s all.
Before the balance patch, I really did think the game was just too hard. However, if you are a fan of the first This is the Police you will enjoy the second game. If you didn't play the first entry and are looking for a cop simulation game, give This is the Police 2 a go.
Fortunately for This is the Police 2, its writing, world-building, and story are great, and are likely what players will remember most from this experience. While there are a couple of problems when it comes to gameplay pacing, This is the Police 2 manages to tell a relevant and enthralling story that stands out within its genre and as better than the original.
