The World Ends with You: Final Remix Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The World Ends With You: Final Remix offers some fun story beats, unique gameplay mechanics, and a brilliant aesthetic that never quite live up to their potential.
The World Ends With You Final Remix is fantastic. A unique ARPG packed with a brilliant story, fun gameplay, and a fascinating premise, everything about it screams instant classic. Don’t sit out on this one, especially if you can get around the initially jarring control options.
The World Ends With You quickly became a cult hit when it released for the DS in 2007. The game used every feature of the DS system; from its dual screens to th
The World Ends With You: Final Remix is a great port, so long as you keep it in handheld mode. Combining RPG storytelling with frantic cell phone game tapping, this funky, high-fashion game is still a surprisingly unique experience, but the Joy-con controls are simply not up to par. With a killer sound track, a surprisingly complex plot, and a whole lot to do after the credits roll, this DS title has more than stood the test of time.
First off, sorry about this review being so late after the game released. Life would not let me play this game long enough to get through. Plus, since I've beaten this game numerous times on DS, I wanted to make sure I got through the new content before I did…
TWEWY -Final Remix- does a stellar job with updating the DS originals visual and aural design. Some control issues and changes to combat mechanics to fit the Nintendo Switch are unfortunate but the story and game systems are still excellent and will still have you eagerly trying to survive the Reaper’s Game.
This is, by all means, the best way to experience the game beyond grabbing a copy of the Nintendo DS original (potentially pricey if you don’t have it already), with non-stop action, great visuals, and plenty of content to wade through. It’s a shame the controls are so annoying to deal with, because all of the other elements fall so neatly into place. It’s as if the foundation has finally been laid for a new entry in a potential series, but if there were ever to be another The World Ends With You game, it would need to drastically improve on the control inputs. Despite these issues, however, t...
Neku finds himself waking up in the middle of the famous Shibuya scramble crosswalk in Tokyo. How did he get there and what are these strange messages appearing on his cell phone?
Ultimately, The World Ends With You: Final Remix is a so-so port of an excellent jRPG. If you've never played it before, there's still a great time to be had. However, if you have the choice, grab the original.
The World Ends With You remains a bright spot in Square Enix’s catalogue – one of its most memorable and original projects. Back when it first launched in 2008, the game had style, substance, and took advantage of the Nintendo DS hardware in clever ways. Nearly a decade later, fans continue to beg for a sequel. Joining a previous mobile port, this Switch version provides another way to play The World Ends With You, featuring extras such as co-op, remixed music, and a brand-new scenario. The additions and overall port are disappointing and frustrating, making this an inferior-but-acceptable way...
The Nintendo DS was a unique system among handhelds. The dual screens paved the way for a host of fascinating new control schemes and ideas. The World Ends With You was a landmark achievement in portable action RPGs, blending touch controls with a heartfelt story and an excellent aesthetic. Eleven years later, Square Enix is bringing the game to the modern age with a port on the Nintendo Switch. Although it’s a portable system, the transplant process required a few important changes. The results are mixed, giving us a faithful yet troubled version of the original release.
I had the feeling while playing through The World Ends With You: Final Remix that with some more time, Square Enix might have made a combat system that utilized those darn buttons that the Switch has while still fitting everything on a single screen, which is wider and clearer than the DS button screen. Final Remix eventually became a physically exhausting chore to play—just try to find a comfortable position for long, extended sessions. The graphics and sound made the hassle all worth it, but by not taking full advantage of the Switch, the beauty of Final Remix runs the risk of only being vie...
