The Last Remnant feels like it was originally an experiment. The team wanted to know if the new capabilities of a new hardware generation could fundamentally change the scope of JRPGs in every conceivable way. Unfortunately, the “new hardware” was 2005’s Xbox 360. This game had issues at launch, particularly it’s unbalanced combat system, but over a decade later these issues stand in stark relief. The Last Remnant is a technical mess, but it's also behind the curve in so many ways. While games like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect use voiceovers for every conversation, The Last Remnant doesn't even voice every main story sequence. While games like Eternal Sonata offer immaculately detailed environments, The Last Remnant often tosses you into cookie-cutter battles in repetitive bland caves or barren fields. The Last Remnant is an RPG in it for the long haul with hours upon hours of gameplay buried deep inside, providing you can overlook the occasionally queasy dialogue and confusing inventory interface. Square Enix deliver not the most original of plots but the world is chock full of vibrant art and superior visual effects on the PC, and such a thought provoking battle system that it’s hard not to enjoy it almost every step of the way.
